Southern California Field Coordinator

UPTE, CWA Local 9119 (“UPTE”) is a dynamic and growing member-run, statewide union representing 16,000 University of California technical, research, and health care professionals. UPTE is seeking to hire an experienced labor organizer and leader to drive the Union’s internal organizing program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Systemwide Director, help design and implement campaigns to recruit and develop leaders and members and win victories on key contract, political and legislative fights
    • Work with Systemwide Director, staff, officers, and member leaders to build a strong unionwide workplace leadership structure
    • Play a lead role in campus, regional, and statewide planning
    • Take leadership on high priority issue campaigns and strategic initiatives
    • Attend weekly meetings to plan and evaluate progress
  • Manage internal organizing staff, training and evaluating staff on implementing a rigorous model for membership leadership development, education and driving key fights of the union
    • Engage hands on in the day to day work of LDCs, helping to model and train LDCs on key skills such as organizing conversations, leadership development, and campaign planning and implementation
    • Hold thorough 1:1s to review staff priorities, goals, turf, leaders, and progress
    • Communicate objectives, strategic plans and goals to staff and leaders
    • Develop and implement support plans for performance improvement
    • Management performance and progressive discipline in conjunction with Systemwide Director when deemed necessary
    • Create and manage field campaign materials
    • Track membership engagement metrics as key performance indicators
    • Develop and implement staff training programs
    • Assessment and implementation, manage contact lists, manage field calls
    • Identify and develop leadership roles for UPTE activists
  • Design and implement membership training and education programs to develop leaders
    • Work with LDCs to develop curriculum, create and implement regular and ongoing worksite leadership training
    • Develop more advanced training programs for Unit Representatives and top leaders on each campus
    • Work with organizing staff to undertake workplace leader skills assessment and individualized training and development plans


  • Strong commitment to the labor movement
  • Minimum of 5 years leading organizing campaigns (can be new organizing, internal organizing; or comparable organizing drives
  • Extensive experience working with, building and sustaining diverse coalition of membership groups
  • Familiarity and experience working with public-sector unions is preferred;
  • Understand the demographics, motivations, expectations and needs of UPTE’s membership and tailoring strategies to match
  • Experience developing, reading, and interpreting metrics for grassroots activists
  • Relationships with organizations in progressive community
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills
  • Experience independently managing projects
  • Experience managing employees is preferred

Compensation includes a competitive salary and benefits package. The salary range for this position is $90,000 – $100,000.
