Position Overview
The Communications Specialist is an entry- to intermediate-level position responsible for helping to develop and implement strategic communications campaigns and projects in support of SMART's organizing, legislative and member mobilization priorities. Additional duties will include providing broad administrative and logistical support to the Communications Department. This position is based in SMART headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Communications Specialist will also work in coordination with the SMART Transportation Division team based in Cleveland, Ohio.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Strategic communications responsibilities may include:
  • Writing and editing content for print and digital mediums.
  • Updating and posting content to SMART websites.
  • Monitoring relevant social media, creating and posting SMART social media content.
  • Media monitoring and press list building.
  • Drafting organizational correspondence and other written materials.
  • Functioning as an ambassador for SMART with union members, the public and the media

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the day-to-day operations and logistics of the department.
  • Helping coordinate and prepare for events and meetings, including logistics and preparation of materials
  • Maintaining effective filing systems.
  • Managing calendars, schedules, and travel arrangements.
  • Assisting with the submission of expenses and processing of invoices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field and preferably two years of related experience, or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent writing, communications, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with primary social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with MS Office products.
  • Ability to multi-task, coordinate multiple ongoing projects and deliver on deadline.
  • Some familiarity and experience with media relations, photography, public speaking and/or strategic campaign development is preferred.
