Salary: $85,000 – $95,000/year depending on experience

BACKGROUND:
Building Pathways, Inc. (BPI) is a Boston-based non-profit organization whose mission is to create access and opportunities for Massachusetts residents, particularly women and people of color, to enter into a career path into the union building trades.

BPI operates 2 main programs consisting of the Building Pathways Pre-Apprenticeship Program which serves greater Boston and the Northeast Center for Tradeswomen’s Equity which serves women career seekers across the state. Through these programs, as well as outreach to young adults, respectful workplace training, and advocacy, BPI addresses the need to recruit and retain new talent into the industry while opening career pathways to groups that have been historically under-represented in the construction trades workforce.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS
The Deputy Director is a new position in Building Pathways whose role is to partner closely with the Executive Director to achieve the organization’s mission and vision. The Deputy Director will assist the Executive Director in all aspects of organization business, including operations and program management, administration and human resources, and will strengthen existing and create new partnerships. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate cultural competency working with diversified communities, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in their work. The Deputy Director serves as the organization’s CEO in the absence of the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

PROGRAM DUTIES

  • Provides programmatic input to the Executive Director in strategic planning.

  • Guides development of annual programmatic work plan and performance goals consistent with strategic plan.

  • Oversees and guides execution of the work plan and successful and timely completion of performance goals.

  • Ensures that job responsibilities are clearly communicated and duties delegated appropriately among staff; supervises program staff and contractors.

  • Supports Executive Director and staff to develop new initiatives and manage existing programs and commitments.

OPERATIONAL DUTIES

  • Works with the Executive Director to develop internal administrative, financial and personnel policies as appropriate.

  • Serves as liaison for internal policy issues involving staff.

  • Provides leadership on staff development across programs.

  • Assists Executive Director to prepare and manage to annual operating/program budgets and reports.

  • Supports Board and committee meetings as required.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

  • Supports Executive Director in coordinating logistics for annual fundraising event.

  • Maintains and grows event sponsorships.

  • Works with media firm to create marketing and communications plan for fundraising event to ensure all pre- and post-event communications are consistent and have appropriate messages.

  • Grants: Researches RFP’s, assists Executive Director with writing and reporting.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS

  • Collaborates with Executive Director and Program Directors on overall communications strategy and priorities to build awareness of Building Pathways’ impact, develop our relationships and build our brand.

  • Supports staff to develop and implement communication strategies and messaging in connection with their programmatic responsibilities and goals.

  • Oversees all marketing relations, including: social media, print media, and general branding of the organization and all its programs.

  • Prepares press releases with the approval of the Executive Director, works with staff to identify potential media opportunities and stories.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

  • Strengthens and maintains relationships between the organization and community, to improve service delivery to community residents.

  • Serves on community committees and boards as assigned by the Executive Director.

  • Represents Building Pathways and the Executive Director at meetings, events, and conferences as needed.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attends staff meetings.

  • Contributes to building a positive team spirit; puts success of the team above own interest; supports everyone’s efforts to succeed; must be able to work well in multidisciplinary team settings.

  • Supports the Executive Director as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
A minimum of five years of progressive non-profit management experience.

Demonstrated track record of excellence in the following technical skills:

  • Program management involving multiple projects in a non-profit environment

  • Strategy to action planning and tracking

  • Reputation for effectiveness and impact

  • Fundraising and community outreach

  • Written and interpersonal communications

  • Attention to detail and high degree of initiative

  • Staff supervision and performance accountability, managing cross-functional teams

  • Data collection and reporting in Excel and other data management and presentation tools

Leadership competencies to include:

  • Strong executive leadership and organizational skills

  • Collaborative and confident, with an ability to unite and engage staff for performance

  • Visionary – able to communicate and work toward organization’s vision

  • High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork minded

  • Building relationships, networking and collaborating effectively with diverse populations and community-based organizations, funders and other key stakeholders

  • Demonstrated empathetic disposition and positive attitude

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, use of the web, customer relationship management systems (Salesforce). Periodic travel, evening and weekend work is required.
