Communications and Research Coordinator

UPTE, CWA Local 9119 (“UPTE”) is a dynamic and growing member-run, statewide union representing 16,000 University of California technical, research, and health care professionals. UPTE is seeking to hire an experienced union staffer and leader to drive the Union’s communications and research program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support a Union-wide communications and research program. This will include a wide variety of communications media as well as strategic research to design and implement comprehensive campaign elements in support of key Union campaigns.
  • Under the direction of the Systemwide Director, assist in the development and implementation of research, communications and campaign strategies essential to support the goals and objectives of the Union.
  • Develop internal and external messaging and communications strategies to frame the Union’s key priorities and initiatives, engaging workers and the public.
  • Write clear and compelling messages to drive member engagement, and continually improve the Union’s communications with varied audiences.
  • Produce a variety of high-quality digital and written materials such as email, direct mail, brochures, flyers, press release, speeches, and talking points.
  • Support bargaining and organizing through market, strategic, and institutional research, and play a flexible role in those campaigns as a strategic campaigner.
  • Provide press support and develop press strategies for Union actions and initiatives.
  • Provide other research and communications support as required.
  • Supervise Communications Staff as Assigned


  • Experience implementing or supporting an organizational communications or research program including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications preferred. Graduation from an accredited four- year college or university with course work in journalism, law, public policy or related field preferred.
  • Outstanding verbal, written and editorial communications skills, especially under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills. Ability to understand complex issues, gather and assess information, identify campaign leverage, and develop strategic pressure points.
  • Experience with research databases and methods.
  • Willingness to work extended hours to meet deadlines and complete projects.
  • Photography, video editing and/or graphic design skills are a plus.
  • Team leadership experience desired

Compensation includes a competitive salary and benefits package. The salary range for this position is $90,000 – $100,000.
