The NYC Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO (NYC CLC) is a non-profit labor membership organization devoted to supporting, advancing and advocating for the working people of New York City. As the nation's largest regional labor federation, the NYC CLC brings together 300 local unions from every trade, occupation, public and private sector of the New York economy. We represent 1.3 million workers, including teachers, truck drivers, operating engineers, nurses, construction workers, electricians, firefighters, retail workers, janitors, train operators, bakers, and many more who are the backbone of today’s workforce.

The purpose of this role is to educate stakeholders and other decision-makers on the NYC CLC’s policy and legislative positions, and to engage in the CLC’s electoral work. The position does not generate new policy per se, but works to understand the policy priorities of the various affiliates, and assist the Political Director, Chief of Staff, and other programmatic staff, in their work advancing those priorities. The Legislative & Policy Coordinator’s portfolio will include advocacy throughout the New York City Council’s legislative session, peripheral monitoring of both the New York State Legislature and Congress, and general tracking of the City’s ever-evolving political landscape.

The work will encompass three key areas: proactive economic research, legislative tracking and advocacy, and electoral campaigns & organizing.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Understanding of economics, taxation, fiscal and monetary policy. One element of this role will be providing key insights on the state of the regional economy. Candidates must be able to articulate the application of theoretical knowledge in a practical, accessible way.
  • Ongoing monitoring and updating of new policy research, articles, conferences, and relaying that information to the staff and affiliates via white papers, memorandums, talking points, etc.
  • Monitor proposed legislation, draft memorandums of support and opposition, and provide testimony at related legislative hearings.
  • Maintain relationships with other Labor Movement legislative staff and relay information regarding important legislative items.
  • Serve as a resource for NYCCLC staff around legislative and worker-centered issues.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in the coordination of the CLC’s endorsement process.
  • Collaborate and strategize with colleagues on new campaigns around organizing, contracts, and legislation.

Basic Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience working in or with Organized Labor
  • BA required, graduate degree preferred
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Strong ability to work independently or with a group
  • Understanding of Organized Labor
  • Strong, balanced and well-informed media diet

The CLC office is centrally located in midtown west and is currently working in a hybrid model with a mix of remote and in-office work.

Salary range is approximately $70,000-90,000 annually. Benefits include health, pension, and 401K.
