Aviation Safety Coordinator
Airline Division

Based in Washington, DC


The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) is looking for an Aviation Safety Coordinator in its Airline Division to build critical relationships with aviation-related people & organizations, educate & train the community regarding safety issues, and serve as an expert on air safety issues.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with leadership and Safety Committees with Airline Division Local Unions.
  • Sets standards for participation in FAA voluntary safety programs, facilitating implementation, operation, and maintenance of these programs.
  • Ensures best practices are shared between all Airline Division employee groups, as well as with other labor associations.
  • Establishes training for the education of members serving on safety programs.
  • Establishes training that qualifies members to participate in NTSB investigations.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding FAR clarifications, interpreting FARs and explaining the FAA’s legal interpretations.
  • Works with the Political and Legislative Action Department as a subject matter expert.
  • Gives presentations at aviation safety events.
  • Coordinates with DOT, FAA, and NTSB personnel with oversight functions at Airline Division represented airlines.
  • Creates and maintains manuals for use as education material, guidelines, program maintenance and improvement, and recordkeeping.

Qualified applicants will have the following required skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, Airline Transport Pilot certification, or Aviation Maintenance Technician certification.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the implementation, operation, and maintenance of aviation safety programs (SMS, ASAP, FOQA, LOSA, FRMP/S, VDRP, AQP).
  • Knowledge of civil aviation aircraft accident investigation and the NTSB.
  • Knowledge of all FARs pertaining to air carrier operations, including parts 121 and 135.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and structure of labor unions.

Preferred applicants will have formal training or experience in aviation safety, familiarity working with or having served on national level aviation initiatives (CAST, AEB, IAT, JIMDAT, ARCs, and ARACs), and an understanding of the FAA regulation interpretation process.
