Coordinator for Member Political Engagement

SEIU, Local 500 is a progressive labor union, organizing and representing over 20,000 workers in the public service in Maryland and Washington, DC. We are a proud affiliate of Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the fastest-growing union in North America. We have an immediate opening for a Coordinator for Member Political Engagement.

Purpose of Position:
The Coordinator for Member Political Engagement will work under the Direction of the Director of Political and Legislative Affairs. The Coordinator for Member Political Engagement performs a wide range of duties including collaborating with staff, union member leaders to engage, educate, and mobilize SEIU Local 500 members to action on the union’s electoral, political, and legislative priorities. A good Coordinator for Member Political Engagement is a great team player who can inspire, develop, and align union people to take political action.

This is a bargaining unit position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs a wide range of duties as assigned by the Director of Political and Legislative Affairs. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.

  1. Identify, recruit, and develop members to participate in the union’s political & legislative program.
  2. Coordinate the development and implementation of a union-wide, membership-based political education and action program that is integrated with the rest of the union strategic plan.
  3. Inform and educate the Local and members regarding legislative and political developments that may affect the union.
  4. Serve as staff liaison to the COPE Committees which includes reporting to leadership and engaging members to grow the program.
  5. Develop COPE fundraising campaigns that includes training staff and members on how to effectively ask for voluntary COPE contributions.
  6. Track and support increased member participation using various database functions.
  7. Represent the union in coalition groups, constituency groups, and community organizations as required.
  8. Assist in drafting legislative testimony or talking points for members and staff.
  9. Assist in training members on providing testimony or speaking at public events in support of SEIU’s priorities.
  10. Prepare meeting agendas and other communication tools such as emails, flyers, etc. as needed.
  11. Lobby visits—schedule, plan, train member participants, conducts, etc.
  12. Coordinates and develops Member Political Organizers.
  13. Assist with planning and implementation of screening, interviewing and conducting political candidate interviews in coordination with the Political and Legislative Affairs Director.
  14. Assist in tracking and advocating for priority legislation.
  15. Other Duties as assigned.
  16. Must be available for occasional travel with overnight stays required. Long and irregular hours, including some nights and weekends.
  17. Must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.

Scope and Nature of Supervision

  • Requires a high level of judgement, leadership, and commitment to the goals of the organization
  • Ability to work independently with members and elected leaders in complex political situations
  • Proven ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Must be able to demonstrate and maintain effective interpersonal working relationships with members, employers, staff, management, community partners and/or consultants.
  • Good written, oral, and large group communications skills.
  • Knowledge of political campaign strategies, planning and execution.
  • Knowledge and experience with managing voter contact and field campaigns.
  • Knowledge and experience working with voter files, VAN and voter targeting.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships and to work in a team
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in use of social media, office suite, and other platforms such as Canva and Adobe Illustrator a plus
  • Ability to work with leaders, staff, partners and operate with a high level of judgment and discretion.

Educational Background

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

Previous Work Experience

  • Two to three years of experience in electoral campaigns, legislative battles or union organizing.
  • Prior experience with the labor movement or other advocacy organizations preferred.

Specialized Knowledge and Training

  • Strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and great interpersonal skills are a must.
  • Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to comprehend the concerns of others.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and grassroots organizing preferred.
  • Excellent written, oral, analytical and large group communications skills.
  • Knowledge of political campaign strategies, planning and execution.
  • Knowledge and experience with managing voter contact and field campaigns.
  • Knowledge and experience working with voter files, VAN and voter targeting.
  • The ability to develop and train staff and worker leaders in the skills needed for COPE and campaigns.
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan.
  • The ability to speak Spanish is strongly preferred.
