The Digital Organizer specifically to engage with workers and run impactful campaigns through online mediums. As a 32BJ digital organizer, you will be part of a team of staff and members who support workers in their fight to form a union in their workplace. Digital organizers report to the campaign lead or director.
This role is for organizing Gig workers in MA and is a combined organizer and digital position on a project basis.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts to non-union workers online and in person
- Building one-on-one relationships with workers and establishing trust
- Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead their campaign
- Conducting individual and group meetings online or in person with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns;
- Support digital outreach to individual workers and groups of workers to take collective public action
- Working to involve community allies in organizing campaigns
- Engaging workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to bear on the industry as a whole.
- Design, write, and manage mass email campaigns, social media and print graphics, digital engagement forms and online actions, mass text message communications, and basic HTML website editing.
- Design and execute growth plans for social media platforms that reach supporters, including elected officials, and union members, with a steadily growing following, robust organic engagement, and daily on-brand, on-message content. This may include targeting paid posts/boost to core audiences.
- Build and support virtual communities of activists and leaders, including building virtual communities on Facebook, TikTok and other social media platforms.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will bring previous experience in union or community organizing. A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required, along with the following:
- Capacity to work independently and with a team
- At least two years worker organizing experience
- The ability to make and follow through on a work plan
- Effective and persuasive communications skills
- The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Fluency in a second language, Spanish preferred.
TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE:
While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes:
- Professional experience in digital organizing, copywriting, digital media or marketing or comparable experience
- High level of proficiency with digital engagement media channels, including:
- P2P text platforms
- Email marketing
- Blast text platforms
- Ability to design content using Adobe, Canva, or other design tools
- Familiarity with WordPress
- Familiarity with Facebook business pages and groups
- Familiarity with Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter, including stories features
- Basic video editing skills
- Experience using design software and ability to quickly produce high-quality, on-brand social media graphics and designs
- Experience building successful digital engagement programs, including growing and sustaining healthy online communities, such as Facebook groups
- Ability to take ownership over the planning and execution of digital organizing programs
- A strong desire to learn and test promising tactics, approaches and platforms in the digital space
- Commitment to working people and unions, and a hunger for fighting for justice
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This position is a full time position that occasionally requires long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays
- This position requires travel to worksites
- Valid driver’s license and car with insurance required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to ascend and descend stairs, walk through large work sites, and participate in marches and demonstrations that can be at least three to four hours in duration.
- Some overnight travel to other East Coast locations may be required
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The salary range for organizers is from $52,223 to $74,733. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days and, after the first year of service, four personal days. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
