Communications Specialist

The Los Angeles Black Worker Center (LABWC) is a growing organization at the forefront of the racial justice and worker rights movements in LA since 2011. The LABWC is recognized as a national leader in the effort to address the challenges of the Black jobs crisis of unemployment and underemployment and the growing inequity in the labor market. The LABWC works toward economic justice in low-income communities of color by building power amongst Black workers and their communities to expand access to quality employment and promote public policies and employment practices for sustainable economic development in South Central LA neighborhoods. The LABWC seeks to hire a Communications Specialist who will be a member of our Organizing Team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative: Assists with the preparation of talking points and messaging for speaking engagements at programs and with the press as needed
- Assist the Communications Coordinator with the execution of strategic, proactive communication and media plans related to LABWC campaigns and programs
- Work collaboratively with the Digital Engagement Organizer to support a committee of LABWC members with media/communications-related training and share knowledge, research, and practices.
- Assists with maintaining a digital database of member stories, quotes, photos, and campaign/program testimonials
- Share infrastructure/administrative responsibilities with other staff; participate in regular staff meetings and project meetings, as needed.
Online & mobile communications: Drive digital communications strategy to engage audiences in LABWC campaigns, events, and actions
- Track, analyze and report on digital metrics to assess reach and impact and inform digital/online communications strategy.
- Utilize creative skills to work with Communication Coordinator to design and manage digital content such as social media posts across multiple platforms, newsletters, and flyers that capture the target audience's attention and influences a direct call to action
- Monitor social media networks for news and trend developments related to organizational priorities that can be used to develop strategies that amplify our message
- Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to social and economic justice and building collective power for workers. The candidate must be proactive, have a strong work ethic with a team-oriented approach.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively implement and manage diverse communications strategies and activities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Final Cut Pro (or other video editing software), Hootsuite (or other social media management tool)
- Ability to build collaborative working relationships with staff and members and able to develop strong professional relationships externally
- An effective listener who seeks and accepts feedback while looking for opportunities to learn and grow in their work.
- Demonstrated experience and commitment to social & economic justice, anti-racism, and building collective power for Black working-class communities
- Understanding of social and economic justice issues facing underrepresented Black workers and LA’s low-income communities and a deep appreciation for Black culture, history, and direct action.
- Experience using social media tools such as infographics and meme imagery to communicate pro-worker messages, a plus.
- Driving for work-related travel, valid CA driver's license, and auto insurance.
- Bachelors or Associates Degree in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, or 1-2 years of relevant experience
COMPENSATION:
Full‐time position up to $24 per hour, depending on experience and a generous benefit package. We are committed to our employees' health, safety, and well‐being by providing flexible work hours and wellness opportunities. We are temporarily working remotely during COVID.
