The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 284 union for school employees and higher education workers in Minnesota, we represent approximately 10,000 workers. Job Title: Full-time External Organizer (Salaried Position)

Starting Rate: $65,377.86 – $68,665.84 annually (Related Experience Preferred)

JOB SUMMARY: The primary responsibilities of this position are:
- Implement strategies for organizing campaigns
- Work closely with staff at the Local, members on lost time and/or International staff on campaigns.
- Must be able to work long, irregular hours and often weekends and evenings.
- Ability to travel with some overnight stays.
- Develop Leaders: Work with groups of members to identify leaders and potential leaders and to work with these members to train and develop them on their individual leadership path. Developing leaders to better enable them to sign up new members, engage members and act in a public way with confidence over policy issues at the State and/or Federal level, represent members, impact in political areas, organize job actions and organize unorganized workers.
You will be responsible for:
- Develop organizing committees, support and lead workers during an organizing drive.
- Perform tasks needed in an organizing campaign, including research, list building, data entry, charting, mapping, event calendars, newsletters, and campaign flyers.
- Communicate with workers through house visits, phone calls, site visits and literature.
- Critically think about ways to offset the employer’s anti-union campaign.
- File election petition with the appropriate agency- MN Bureau of Mediation or National Labor Relations Board.
- Attend pre-election conference and assist in hearings.
- Ability to effectively assess, move and test workers.
- Ability to execute campaign plans.
- Ability to gather, analyze and present statistical data.
- Ability to mobilize workers around issues.
- Ability to maintain a commitment to educating the members on the Union and their contract.
- Engages members in participation in union events, political and lobbying activities. Help members hold elected officials accountable.
- Work with community and other groups to advance contract and community campaigns.
What you’ll need to do the job:
- Ability to establish rapport with and organize members in widely diversified ethnic, social and economic groups.
- Good judgment and ability to discern priorities when faced with many important tasks.
- Knowledge of labor rights and contract language and ability to learn these quickly.
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.
- Ability to communicate well in writing and orally; ability to mobilize membership.
- Ability to maintain work files and comply with administrative reporting.
- These skills will normally have been developed by working as a full-time union staff member in organizing or representational assignments.
- Proficiency with computer and applications including, but is not limited to: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Power Point, E-mail and Internet.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two or more years related public sector labor union experience preferred. Prior school district work experience and SEIU local union activism is helpful.
- Driver’s License required.
