Union Representatives

The New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board, Workers United is a Union dedicated to internal shop leadership and new organizing in order to change an unequal economic system. We are currently seeking Union Representatives to work in a variety of industries side-by-side with workers, leaders and developing leaders.
These jobs are open to both brand new and experienced Union Representatives. If you believe workers’ rights are human rights; if you believe that Union organizing, Union contracts and shop floor leadership are key parts of fighting poverty; if you believe in equal rights for all; and if you are passionate about all these things; please apply.
Responsibilities
The Union Representative is responsible for identifying potential leaders and supporting workers who are building the Union in their shops. Representatives are responsible for helping to enforce contracts through actions and grievances. Grievances will require understanding contract meaning, working with stewards and engagements with employers which may or may not be contentious in nature. Also, negotiating or learning to negotiate contracts with worker committees is required.
Duties vary by shop, and may include but are not limited to the following:
Opportunities
- Have meaningful and successful conversations with workers that move them in their leadership
- Create and propose concrete steps necessary to advance the Union
- Think through and propose tactics based on what you see working and what you see not working
- Problem-solve to overcome obstacles to achieving goals and completing tasks, filing grievances when necessary
- Negotiate or learn to negotiate Union Contracts with worker committees.
Team
- Work with a small, experienced team of Union Representatives
- Provide and receive support from others on the team
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience with, and enthusiasm for, working with people from diverse backgrounds
- Able and willing to work long and irregular hours
- Able to problem-solve between people with different goals and interests
- Must be able to identify and meet deadlines, this is an extremely time sensitive job
- Can handle multiple priorities at once
- Bilingual (English-Spanish preferred)
- A car and valid drivers’ license and insurance are required
- Strong commitment to the labor movement and social justice
- Fundamentally believes that Unions are critical to changing the balance of power and fighting poverty
- Ability to work independently with a strong independent work ethic
Compensation & Benefits
- The Union offers a comprehensive benefits package, with fully paid health insurance, pension, and an optional employee paid 401k.
- The Union follows careful Covid procedures and requires that all staff have a record of their vaccines on file with the Union.
- Compensation is $65,000 to $75,000 based on experience.
- A car allowance and insurance stipend are provided, in addition, expenses are reimbursed.
Location: This work will be conducted in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.
