Staff Attorney
Based in New York City, NY
The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council (“HTC”) is seeking two Attorneys - one with up to 1-5 years of experience and another with 5 or more years of experience – to join its Legal Department. We represent nearly 40,000 workers employed in the hospitality and gaming industries in New York and Northern New Jersey.
Duties and responsibility may include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Assist the Generals Counsel in all legal matters;
- Advise and counsel HTC leadership;
- Negotiate contracts, draft contract language, subpoenas, requests for information, position statements, and other general legal correspondence;
- Ensure compliance with applicable law and governing documents;
- Provide general legal advice and answer specific contractual questions, as needed;
- Participate in all aspects of HTC’s operations (including picket lines, strikes, job actions, etc.);
- Conduct investigations into sensitive matters unrelated to grievances and, where appropriate, make recommendations as to possible courses of action;
- Draft arbitration demands, investigate, and prepare witnesses and cases;
- Represent HTC in mediation, arbitration, litigation, and other fora;
- Handle unfair labor practice charges and advocate at NLRB proceedings;
- Assist with drafting state and municipal legislative proposals;
- Represent HTC in human resource matters; and
- Ferret out and investigate contract violations and enforce the contract.
Minimum Requirements:
- Applicants must be admitted to the New York State or New Jersey bar and be in good standing (or pending for recent law school graduates).
- Excellent oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement or workers’ rights;
- Ability to be effective in confrontational situations, to handle multiple projects simultaneously, and to work efficiently yet accurately;
- Willingness to travel on behalf of the Union, when necessary; and
- The ability to speak a second language is preferable.
Salary and Benefits:
We offer a competitive salary ($90,000 to $150,000, depending on experience), and an excellent benefits package.
