Lead Organizer
Based in Burbank, CA
DESCRIPTION:
The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) is the largest and foremost musicians union in the world. This is an opportunity to work with world-class professional musicians who prepare and perform music for theatrical motion pictures, television and streaming services in the Los Angeles area. AFM Local 47 represents the musicians who record on major scoring stages and recording studios of every size, and perform onstage at major concert halls, the Hollywood Bowl, arenas, theaters, clubs and every possible venue in our region.
The Organizer will work with professional musicians on a contract campaign for negotiations with major media corporations scheduled for this winter. The Organizer will plan and implement other contract and organizing campaigns for musicians in the areas of both media and live performance.
DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Lead planning, strategy, and implementation of organizing drives.
- Work with both in-house and rank-and-file researchers to identify and assess potential targets.
- Work with our communications department, rank-and-file committees and our parent AFM communications department to implement comprehensive campaign communications.
- Work with parent American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and AFM Locals in other locations as well as rank-and-file committees to coordinate campaign actions and support national campaigns.
- Work with our labor allies in the region, and help build our labor coalition in support of contract goals.
- Work with Local, State and Federal legislators in support of contract and other union goals.
- Implement organizing drives.
REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of:
- Computer programs: Microsoft Office, Google Drive and Google apps, email and internet search tools.
- Organizing methodology.
- Labor law, especially with respect to union organizing
Ability to:
- Establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Discern priorities and meet competing deadlines.
- Listen, write and verbally communicate at a high comprehension level
- Quickly and efficiently build a professional and team atmosphere while meeting tight deadlines with conflicting demands in a fast-paced environment.
- Understand and commit to AFM Local 47's members and mission.
- Independently implement overall union goals and expectations in a competent and professional manner.
- Work long, varied hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be able to drive and maintain a valid driver's license, and travel as needed.
Experience:
- Preferably, 2 to 5 years of experience as a labor organizer.
- Leading or supervising internal and external organizing campaigns.
- Experience developing strategic organizing plans.
SALARY and TERM:
Salary Range: $4,000 to $5,000 monthly, health care benefits, salary commensurate with experience
