Field Organizer

Based in Southern California or Chicago, IL

UE seeks an experienced Organizer to join our national staff in an assignment based in either Southern California or Chicago. This position involves travel to both locations, as well as other locations around the country. The position involves local union leadership development, internal organizing, and community organizing.

This position will play a key role in member education for UE’s Green Locomotive Project. The Green Locomotive Project is UE’s new initiative to create good union jobs, address climate change, and clean up pollution in the low-income communities and communities of color which bear the brunt of pollution from rail yards. The right candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively with workers from a wide variety of backgrounds and beliefs.

Requirements:

  • Previous worker organizing experience, and knowledge of the labor movement, including principles of union organizing and collective bargaining.

  • Willingness to travel for extended periods.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred

  • Previous experience with community organizing and/or climate justice work preferred.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.

  • A working vehicle and a valid drivers’ license.

  • Basic computer and writing skills.

  • A strong commitment to social, racial, gender and climate justice.

The salary for this position is $52,000 per year. Health insurance is provided.
