Location: Oregon (ONA’s office is in Tualatin, Oregon. We represent and organize workers across the state.)
Hours and travel: Organizers work with healthcare workers who work across the state in 24/7 facilities. By the nature of this work, there are times where travel, working nights, and overnight stays are required.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are looking for an Organizer to join our team and use best practices and strategy to guide healthcare workers to advocate for themselves, their patients, their families, and our communities. As an ONA organizer, you will identify and develop leaders and support unorganized healthcare workers to form their union. You may also work on internal campaigns map units, identify and develop union leaders to increase healthcare worker power.
The new Organizer will join our supportive and collaborative team of skilled organizers. Our team is inclusive and representative of and committed to racial and LGBTQ+ equity. Our team meets regularly, and each organizer meets with our Lead and Director to strategize and strengthen our work. We assist with one another’s campaigns, and we each work with a coach for professional growth and continued development.

ORGANIZER ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
WORK AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH PROSPECTIVE AND CURRENT ONA MEMBERS:
- Hold one-on-one organizing conversations with unorganized healthcare workers. Visit workers in their homes, worksites, or other locations.
- Develop broad, representative organizing committees of worksite leaders; Identify, recruit, develop, and train them to move worksite organizing campaigns; prepare ONA leaders to speak and participate in organizing committee meetings.
- Continually assess workers leaders via structure tests and one-on-ones.
- Communicate effectively and promptly with prospective and current members.
- Compose concise and compelling newsletters, bargaining updates, and other materials that move members to action.
CREATE, RUN, AND EVALUATE STRATEGIC ORGANIZING CAMPAIGNS
- Map workplaces, obtain and create employee charts.
- Assess issue and campaign winnability.
- Develop campaign plans for both internal (existing unit) and external (new unit) organizing.
- Facilitate meetings with member leaders, organizing committee, and membership.
- Facilitate direct worker actions (i.e., March on the boss, community rallies.)
- Input and manage notes in database.
COLLABORATE, COORDINATE, AND SUPPORT THE ONA ORGANIZING DEPARTMENT
- Be an active participant of the organizing team during our team meetings and 1:1s.
- Work collaboratively with organizing team members and practice our organizing team agreements.
- Inform Director of Labor and Organizing and team Lead of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings.
- Meet goals and deadlines.
- Attend conferences and trainings to improve current knowledge or develop new skill or knowledge.
- Back-up other staff when on leave or otherwise unavailable.
- Mentor new staff during their orientation.
- Develop and present trainings to members, staff, and others.
PARTICIPATE IN AND SUPPORT ONA’S ORGANIZATION-WIDE PROGRAMS AND CAMPAIGNS
- Facilitate ONA interdepartmental meetings to support worker’s organizing
- Participate in ONA’s Racial Equity and Inclusion work
- Participate in political activities, such as, canvassing, phone banking and text banking
- Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings ideally in-person or electronically when necessary.
- Increase ONA membership via New employee onboarding and organizing 1:1s.
- Maintain confidentiality of ONA strategic initiatives and targets.
- Attend and present at Cabinet meetings.
- Attend and facilitate educational trainings ONA House of Delegates and Bargaining Unit Leadership Conferences and other such functions.
- Identify and recruit bargaining unit leaders to fill statewide leadership positions on the ONA Board, Cabinets, and House of Delegates.
- Mentor those leaders when appropriate.
- Participate in local labor activities and support other unions in the community.
- Other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of three years’ experience as a union organizer, community or political organizer, or labor union representative.
- People with professional experience in the health care sector, including RNs, are encouraged to apply.
- Smart phone with data plan, which ONA will reimburse per collective bargaining agreement.
- The ability to travel to work sites throughout the state.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Office Outlook, and membership databases.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn about relevant labor law, Nurse Practice Act, HIPAA, and Oregon’s Staffing Law.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This is a full time, exempt position. The salary is based on applicable years of experience applied to the wage scale outlined in the union staff ’s collective bargaining agreement. ONA offers a starting annual salary range of $73,521 - $106,038 based on experience.
There is an exceptional benefits package including employer paid medical, dental, vision, long and short-term disability, life insurance, 401(k) employer match of up to 11% to IBT managed fund. Plus, annually: 5 weeks’ vacation, 8 personal days, 2 weeks sick time.
