Field Representative

The University Council – American Federation of Teachers Local 1474 is a statewide Council of nine Chapters representing approximately 6,500 Librarians and Non-Senate Faculty at the University of California’s ten campuses and the UC College of Law.
We are currently seeking a:
100% time Field Representative for the Bay Area Chapter of UC-AFT Local 1474 (UCB, UCSF, UC College of Law)
THIS PERSON MUST RESIDE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA.
Desired Start Date: April 15, 2023.
Field Representative Responsibilities: The Field Representative will report to the statewide Executive Director, while working closely with the UC-AFT President and board of the Bay Area Chapter. Working with Chapter officers, the Field Representative will be responsible for membership recruitment, leadership development and member education programs (approx. 1,500 unit members). The Field Representative will work with and train stewards to enforce three contracts through organizing, informal process and the grievance procedure.
Additionally, the Field Representative will assist the Executive Director and Chapter Board with a variety of tasks such as communicating information to the membership via e-mail, websites and social media, updating a membership database and a grievance archive.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience as a union organizer with demonstrated success recruiting members and identifying and developing member leaders
- Demonstrated success building a worksite structure and supporting contract campaigns toward strike readiness
- 3-5 years experience handling grievances and preparing case files for arbitration
- Demonstrated experience training member stewards
- Strong understanding of public sector labor law and unfair practice theory
- Demonstrated success resolving issues informally and implementing remedies formally through settlement agreements
- Good research, writing, data management, basic literature production and computer skills
- Experience in higher education, optimally with librarians and non-tenure-track faculty, experience with k-12 also desired
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and efficiently in the context of a general plan
- Exceptional interpersonal and group communication skills
- Exceptional organizational and logistical skills
- Enthusiasm, flexibility, and a sense of humor
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Three years of union leadership or union staff experience in a position requiring contract enforcement, member education and systematic internal organizing
- California Driver’s license
- Proficient in using Mac computers with PC and mac software. Knowledge of Gmail and other google applications a plus
Salary: Pursuant to UFRE staff collective bargaining agreement; the full-time starting salary is currently $80,529.
This position is exempt and requires travel and attendance at evening/weekend events. It includes employer paid health benefits, a 401(k), and 4 weeks paid vacation.
