NWSEO
National Weather Service Employees Organization

Communication Director

Based in Washington, DC

The National Weather Service Employees Organization (NWSEO) is a federal union representing over 4,000 employees in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NWSEO is seeking a talented and motivated Communication Director who can improve and expand our messages into the new era of communications while harmonizing and incorporating our existing communications into a multi-channel communications strategy. Our broad strategy for communications includes emphasizing member stories, the NWSEO brand to members and potential members, the public, and the media.

The Director of Communications could be called upon to organize and participate in traditional media activities such as responding to or pitching stories to press. The Communications Director works independently and take the initiative to design and develop a multifaceted communications strategy and programs to various audiences that advance the organization’s objectives (i.e., membership recruitment and maintenance, garnering support for the union’s goals and public policy positions through press releases, placement of opinion pieces, social media) rather than waiting for direction.

The ideal candidate has a combination of some or all the following experiences:

  • Knowledge of labor unions and the labor movement gained as either a member of a labor union or working for a labor union.
  • Knowledge of Federal civil service issues and working conditions gained as a former federal employee.
  • Basic website design, development, and maintenance. Ability to troubleshoot web issues either alone or with online web support.
  • Social media management: moderating Facebook groups, developing and executing social media campaigns, writing short, compelling content catered to specific platforms.
  • Knowledge of operations of a membership association, including developing or administering recruitment initiatives and communication of the association’s activities to its members through social media, email marketing, and other platforms.
  • Knowledge of public policy issues involving Congress and congressional appropriations and functioning of Federal agencies.
  • Candidates should have an interest in weather and possess the ability to understand scientific and technical information and then convey it to the intended audience. We are seeking a candidate who possesses excellent communications skills and who isn’t afraid to ask questions when necessary.
  • Ability to write press releases, and other documents with accuracy and correct grammar.
  • A good listener, trustworthy and willing to go the extra mile for their intended audience, a reporter or a NWSEO leader or member.
  • Accountable and available when called on short notice and delivers on short-fused deadlines.
  • Organized, and can communicate in an organized way, and presents themselves professionally.
  • Self-driven work style, able to execute tasks autonomously without constant supervision.
  • Comfortable navigating current and emerging technology.
  • Able to design, order, and house union promotional products for various events.
  • Available to travel 3-5 times per year.

Hours of work and pay: This is a full-time salaried position. Salary range is $50,000 – $75,000 and benefits are competitive.

This position is remote and may be worked anywhere in the US, therefore the position involves 100% telework except when attending events or appointments, the union’s annual conventions and council meetings held at various locations across the country.

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related field, Masters preferred.
  • Work experience in public affairs and communications through internships or employment.
  • Working knowledge of multimedia tools including web design, video, and social media
  • Familiarity with a variety of digital communications tools and comfortable with learning and implementing new tools.
  • Working knowledge of graphic design: Adobe Creative Suite, Canva.
  • Familiarity with using Excel or Google sheets to compile analytics reports.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail, ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Proficient with MSWord and Google documents.
