Experienced Organizing Director

Based in the Cleveland, OH area

 

UFCW Local 880 is a diverse membership organization fighting for economic and social justice. Our strength comes from organizing and representing our members in their workplaces and standing in solidarity with our communities. We are seeking an experienced Organizing Director focused on growth who can strengthen our membership through new organizing victories.

The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 3 years previous experience in strategic union organizing and possess these basic skills:

  • The ability to develop and follow through on a work plan
  • Effective and persuasive communications skills
  • Basic writing and computer skills
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Willingness to conduct house visits and site visits
  • Passionately communicate urgency and move people to take bold action
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Directing the Organizing Staff in day-to-day operations.
  • Training staff in best practices for planning and winning NLRB organizing campaigns.
  • Devising yearly organizing goals consistent with the mission of the local.
  • Standardizing systems and best practices that bring members into the union through NLRB elections and card check campaigns.
  • Collaborating with organizers to devise benchmarks for campaigns while creating tangible plans, staff assignments and strategies to achieve them.
  • Leading and providing support to staff organizers in the execution of overall campaign plans and individual work plans, solely focused on growth.
  • Working with leaders and committees to educate, agitate and motivate workers into action.
  • Planning, mobilization and turnout for worksite actions, union events, marches, etc.
  • Conducting one-on-ones, site visits and worker-led committee meetings
  • Maintaining database with accurate and detailed information on worksites, individual workers and assignments.
  • Preparing and managing work plans, calendars, files and records.
  • Developing staff to understand appropriate bargaining units under the NLRB “Community of Interest” standard.
  • Teaching staff to connect NLRB organizing to winning first collective bargaining agreements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position is full time and occasionally requires long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires travel to worksites.
  • Valid driver’s license and car with insurance required.
