California State University Employees Union, SEIU Local 2579 (CSUEU), an affiliate of California State Employees Association (CSEA), has an opening which will be filled in the classification of Sr. Communications Specialist ($6,190/mo - $9,163/mo). The position will be based in Sacramento, CA.

California State University Employees Union/SEIU Local 2579 represents approximately 16,000 employees across California. CSUEU’s members are the backbone of the California State University system. This position reports directly to the Communications Director and/or CSUEU Executive Director.

Under the direction of the Executive Director or designee, the Sr. Communications Specialist/ Digital Media Specialist will work with the Communications Director to develop, implement, and maintain a strong online communications program for CSUEU members with an emphasis on digital communications including website, email, social media or similar platforms and channels member outreach via electronic and social media.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, and be able to respond to time-sensitive communications and deadlines. The Digital Media Specialist must be proficient in HTML, website authoring and editing, design programs such as In Design, Adobe Creative Suite or similar products, as well as have demonstrated success in campaign strategies and email messaging.

The Digital Media Specialist is expected to stay up to date on digital media and technologies, and to find new opportunities to communicate with CSUEU members. Must be a strong self-starter and have a commitment to fulfill the objectives of the organization.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the planning and execution of major internal and external communications programs and campaigns for the CSUEU.
  • Updating the organization’s website.
  • Assists with development, and implementation of organizational and divisional communications, policies and strategies.
  • Developing organization signage, flyers, brochures, and membership materials.
  • Assist in developing and providing oversight on major communications projects and publications.
  • Coordinate campaigns across traditional and digital media, including print and broadcast news, email, video, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • Responsible for logistical support for campaigns, including Creation of digital, video, audio and print content.
  • Utilize analytics, such as Google Analytics or other programs to measure initiative results.
  • Develops media strategy, provides pro-active media outreach, and field inquiries from the news media, and helps prepare members and leaders for contact with the news media.

Ideal Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, competence in proof reading and editing, and confidence in writing and design abilities.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Demonstrated design, verbal, visual/graphic, interviewing and analytical communications skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in HTML, web authoring and editing, using Photoshop, InDesign, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Audacity, or other media editing software
  • Familiarity with campaign communications and organizing.
  • Knowledge of marketing automation tools, such as Google Analytics, WordPress or similar tools.


  • Four-year college degree in communications, marketing or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years in digital marketing, content creation or related digital medial role.
