Position Title: International Instructor – Education Department (FT – Exempt)
Reports to: Director of Education
Location: Remote

Overview:
The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) is seeking to fill the position of International Instructor – Education Department. This position is remote.

SMART is a broad-based labor union representing over 200,000 sheet metal workers, service technicians, bus operators, engineers, conductors, sign workers, welders, production employees, and more across the United States and Canada. Our members ensure the quality of the air we breathe, promote energy efficiency, and produce and provide vital services that move products to market and passengers to their destinations. With members in scores of different occupations, we advocate for fairness in the workplace, excellence at work, and opportunity for all working families.

General Duties/Responsibilities:
The SMART Education Department builds training curricula and delivers training to all SMART leaders, including Business Managers/Regional Council Presidents, Business Representatives, Organizers, other elected union officials, and SMART International Staff. The Department ensures that all SMART leaders are equipped with the training they need to successfully perform their positions and serve the SMART membership.

The International Instructor position will be responsible for assisting the Education Director in all aspects of training – including developing curriculum, delivering training, and ensuring all content is current. Extensive travel is required for this position.

The International Instructor’s responsibilities include the following:
The SMART Education Department develops and delivers training curricula to all SMART leaders, including Business Managers/Regional Council Presidents, Business Representatives, Organizers, and other elected union officials, as well as SMART International Staff. Our goal is to ensure that all SMART leaders have the opportunity to attend, learn, and receive the necessary training to effectively fulfill their roles and serve our membership.

The International Instructor position will assist the Education Director in various training aspects, such as curriculum development, training delivery, and ensuring content relevance.

The responsibilities of the International Instructor include:

  • Assist in the development and preparation for SMART Education Department Classes, webinars, and other programs as directed.
  • Produce research-based materials to educate SMART Members.
  • Build training curriculum, training materials, and other content to support the Education Department.
  • Deliver training to SMART Union Leaders.
  • Work with and maintain strong communications with the Education Department Director and instructors as needed.
  • Keep abreast of training materials and programs offered by the International Training Institute (ITI), National Energy Management Institute (NEMI), National Energy Management Institute Committee (NEMIC), Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT), and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA).
  • Update and coordinate course topics as required to keep training up to date with the needs of the International, International Staff, and Local Unions.
  • "Ensure training remains current and relevant to the needs of the International, International Staff, and Local Unions by updating and coordinating course topics as necessary."
  • Develop practical electronic, virtual, and hybrid training platforms to the greatest extent to allow access to the greatest number of participants within the organization.
  • " Assist in creating accessible electronic, virtual, and hybrid training platforms to maximize participation across the organization."
  • Coordinate workshops, focus groups, and other means necessary for the development of specific training.
  • "Facilitate workshops, focus groups, and other essential avenues for crafting specialized training programs."
  • Meet the goals of the Education Department as established by the SMART Strategic Plan and comply with all directives and assignments of the General President and the Director of Education.
  • Medium to advanced knowledge of and compliance with the SMART Constitution and Ritual.
  • Knowledge of the organizing process.
  • Medium to advanced knowledge of US Labor Law.
  • Advanced ability to communicate and work with diverse staff and individuals within the Department, local unions, councils, the International, and other Unions to accomplish the goals of the Department and the International.
  • Medium to advanced knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of Local Union and Council Officials, including but not limited to the Business Manager, Business Representatives, Financial Secretary-Treasurer, President, General Chairperson, Local Chairperson, Trustees, and Organizers.
  • Medium knowledge of the claimed work jurisdiction of SMART.
  • Carry out assignments as directed by the General President, Assistants to the General President, and General Secretary-Treasurer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The position will require long hours, extensive travel, and time away from home.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
We are looking for a candidate with at least two- or three years of experience in curriculum design, research, classroom instruction, and adult education. A candidate with experience as a SMART Organizer, Business Manager, Regional Council President, Business Representative, or Regional Council Representative is preferred. Experience in union education, labor movement, industry, legal, and corporate research is a plus.

  • Familiarity with subscription databases such as Bloomberg or Lexis Nexis for research.
  • Familiarity with basic instructional design principles and best practices.
  • Works efficiently and meets all deadlines.
  • Professional attitude and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to distinguish between audiences and the type of material that should be directed to each.
  • Ability to interact and work effectively with union members and staff.
  • Ability to independently manage projects from start to finish.
  • Must be willing to learn and adhere to SMART’s guidelines for email, file storage, and other policies as required.
  • Proficient using MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and other software.
  • Proficient using Zoom and MS Teams.

The compensation for this position is set at the International Representative/Organizer rate as established under the SMART Constitution. This salary is currently $173,243.00. Benefits include excellent health care, dental, and vision; a defined benefit pension plan; 401(k); and generous paid time off.
