Staff Organizer

The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO, Local 3550 AFL-CIO) is seeking a full-time Staff Organizer with employment beginning in May 2024. This is an in-person role in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the expectation of in-office work most days each week.

GEO is the labor union comprising Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and Graduate Student Staff Assistants (GSSAs) at the University of Michigan. Our union’s mission is to represent, advocate for, and organize graduate student workers and to build collective power in the pursuit of social and economic justice. GEO is a democratically run union that values worker-led strategic visioning and action. The Staff Organizer works alongside volunteer officers and rank-and-file members to both improve campus working conditions and fight for the common good. In particular, the Staff Organizer will play a key role in unionizing Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRAs) at the University of Michigan in 2024–2025.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Identify, recruit, and develop rank-and-file members as leaders;
  • Build out infrastructure to train and develop rank-and-file members as organizers;
  • Identify organizational and strategic gaps and raise them with officers;
  • Assist officers in developing short-term and long-term (3+ year) organizing plans, and support them in executing these;
  • Consult on campaign strategy;
  • Work to foster transparency and democracy within the union;
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including (but not limited to): maintaining an accurate list of membership, keeping the office organized, prepping materials for General Membership Meetings, etc.;
  • Attend committee meetings, actions, orientations, and events.

Desired qualifications:

  • At least three (3) years experience as an organizer; preferred applicants will have at least two (2) years paid experience as an organizer in the labor movement;
  • Experience conceptualizing and executing large-scale campaign strategy;
  • Strong delegation skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate leadership;
  • Experience with and interest in developing organic leaders within marginalized/minority communities;
  • Ability to work with experienced and brand new organizers;
  • Commitment to increasing democratic participation within an organization;
  • Ability to self-direct—independently develop and prioritize goals, tasks, and timelines, and take initiative in projects;
  • Ability to work irregular hours (i.e. evenings and weekends);
  • Approachable with strong communication skills; able to address conflict and conflict resolution.

GEO staff are unionized, represented by The News Guild (TNG). Per the contract between TNG-CWA Local 34022 and the Graduate Employees’ Organization, the base Staff Organizer salary is $76,000 (not including benefits). Benefits include excellent health insurance, short and long-term disability, cell phone stipend, transportation and parking stipend, and a retirement match.
