Director of Special Projects

Based in Chicago, IL

 

The Illinois Council of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is currently seeking candidates for the position of Director of Special Projects. AFSCME Council 31 is a statewide labor organization with nearly 300 affiliated local unions representing 75,000 public service workers in a wide variety of fields—including health care, public works, public safety, education and human services. Council 31 has a strong tradition of progressive, democratic trade unionism and plays an active role in the political, legislative and policy arenas.

The Director of Special Projects is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies, including writing member messaging, as well as utilizing new media platforms, to advance bargaining, legislative, organizing and other priority campaigns. Works collaboratively with other research, communications, and field staff to analyze critical issues, increase member involvement, and expand social media presence. Fosters efforts to enhance awareness of AFSCME initiatives and priorities and to strengthen the union’s public profile as a key force working to improve the lives of working families. Position based in Chicago.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advances member and community communications by developing bulletins, direct mail, videos and other materials;
  • Writes clear and compelling messages to drive member engagement;
  • Develops policy frameworks through research and analysis;
  • Helps to develop effective campaign strategies to advance issues of importance to union members.
  • Prepares policy briefs, educational materials, and advocacy statements;
  • Assists in developing and implementing comprehensive digital campaigns that engage both members and potential members and utilize gamut of channels;

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the labor movement;
  • Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write quickly and clearly;
  • Ability to collaborate and work well with others;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion;
  • Well-organized, thorough and attentive to details;
  • Ability to understand complex issues, gather and assess information, and develop strategic pressure points;
  • Knowledge of design and video editing tools;
  • Working knowledge of major social media platforms;
