Full-time Organizer

Based in Lynn, MA

 

The North Shore Labor Council (Massachusetts), a central labor council of the AFL-CIO, is a coalition of 50 unions representing 15,000 union members and their families who live on the North Shore. We are a member-led organization that brings together union and non-union workers from diverse backgrounds to fight for power in order to improve the lives of working people and our communities. In addition to coordinating political endorsements and union solidarity efforts, we work closely with our affiliates and community partners to develop and win issue campaigns at the local, regional, and statewide level.

The organizer will:

  • Work Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, reporting in person to the office of the North Shore Labor Council when not in the field. Will have to work some weekend days. Remote work available up to 2 days a week pending approval.
  • Identify, recruit, and develop new and emerging leaders through 1:1 meetings, group training, and issue & action campaigns.
  • Support President and Executive Board in developing vision for NSLC, from strategic planning and budgeting to research and campaign development to monthly meeting agendas
  • Report to President and Eboard via regular check-ins, written reports, and other duties as assigned by the president and Eboard.
  • Develop relationships with & coordinate among principal officers of local affiliates across the labor movement
  • Staff NSLC campaigns and NSLC committees (ie. Political Action, Women’s)
  • Coordinate with AFL-CIO, State Fed, and community partners
  • Communicate with press, key local institutions, and elected officials
  • Support day-to-day NSLC operations including
    • Bookkeeper, Treasurer, & Trustees
    • Fundraising
    • Email, phone calls, mail, social media
  • Direct inquiries from workers and general public about the labor movement, community resources, hot shop calls, and potential labor law violations
  • Grow our council by recruiting other unions to join

Candidates should have:

  • 1 - 5 years of organizing experience (new, internal, institutional, and/or community)
  • 1 on 1 relational organizing experience
  • Experience with direct actions and public events
  • Ability to relate and connect with people from a wide-range of backgrounds and experiences
  • Demonstrated interest in workers’ rights issues
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and anti-racist principles
  • Experience with electoral politics
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Reliable, personal transportation. Must be able to travel throughout North Shore, Boston, Merrimack Valley
  • Flexible schedule - some evenings and weekends required
  • Familiarity with Google, Microsoft, basic graphic design (Canva, Adobe), virtual meeting programs, contact management programs
  • Bilingual English & Spanish preferred

Compensation package includes health/dental insurance, IRA up to 3% match, cell phone reimbursement up to $100. Salary Range is 55k-65k depending on level of experience.
