Apprenticeship Director

Based out of Inland Empire, Central Valley, or Los Angeles, CA

The California Labor Federation represents over 1,300 affiliate unions in California that collectively represent 2.3 million union members in trucking, retail, hospitality, and other service sector jobs, janitorial, construction, health care, local and state government, education, arts and entertainment, warehousing and logistics, manufacturing, and a variety of other sectors. The Apprenticeship Director will work with the Federation’s Organizing Director to develop a quality training and skills building program for workers to become union organizers and access career pathways in the labor movement. The Apprenticeship Director will develop a recruitment and training program for union organizer jobs with an emphasis on recruitment of youth, immigrant communities and communities of color, low-income communities, and justice-involved individuals.

The Apprenticeship Director will be responsible for ensuring the completion of the grant deliverables and reporting and will execute the following:

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and develop relationships with local community, academic and labor partners for the program
  • Convene regular meetings of these partners and will share monthly progress updates with them
  • Lead local partners in developing decision making processes, protocols, and metrics for the program
  • Work with the UCLA Labor Center and local educational partner to establish course standards for the apprenticeship curriculum
  • Develop and implement a recruitment plan for youth, immigrant communities and communities of color, low-income communities, justice-involved individuals
  • Design multi-media recruitment materials on careers in union organizing
  • Create a plan detailing how the Organizer Apprenticeship program can be scaled up for establishment in other regions in California and across the country
  • Develop funding requests for the implementation phase of the Organizer Apprenticeship
  • Complete a report outlining the action plan for moving from the planning and development phase into the apprenticeship implementation
  • Assist in the planning and staffing support for the Federation’s conferences, trainings, meetings, convenings, and events
  • Provide staffing support to the Federation’s Executive Secretary-Treasurer in the field.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5-10 years of experience as a union organizer and experience as an organizing lead
  • Experience in training and curriculum development
  • Experience in community / labor coalition work
  • Familiarity with workforce development and/or experience in grant reporting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to speak publicly and clearly present information to groups
  • Strong ability to take initiative, problem-solve, and identify relevant resources
  • Attention to detail, ability to take direction and balance multiple tasks and time-sensitive assignments
  • Ability to excel working in fast-paced, high-pressure environments – both individually and collaborating as part of a team.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual (written and verbal) English/Spanish speaking skills strongly preferred;
  • Prior experience organizing with community-based organizations, student groups, youth, immigrant communities and communities of color, or justice-involved individuals strongly preferred;

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The Apprenticeship Director is a grant-funded 12-month position. The annual salary for this position is between $103,000 and $108,000, dependent on experience. This position includes excellent full family medical, dental, and vision benefits and 401k contributions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The position may be based out of the Inland Empire, Central Valley, or Los Angeles County. Organizers will spend significant time in union halls, job sites, and in the field, meeting workers where they’re at and supporting the work of affiliate unions and central labor councils. There is frequent evening and weekend work. This position requires travel throughout the state of California, a driver’s license and access to a car is required.
