UM Full-Time Campus Organizer

Based at the University of Michigan


The Lecturers’ Employee Organization (LEO), AFT Michigan Local 6244, AFL-CIO, the union representing nontenure-track faculty at the University of Michigan (UM), is seeking to hire an organizer for a 25-40 hours a week position, per applicant preference. This is for an ongoing position, with an initial six month probationary appointment. LEO represents ~2000 non-tenure-track faculty on 3 campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint) and ~180 librarians, archivists, and curators. We are largely a volunteer organization with a strong organizing ethos. LEO lecturers recently finished negotiating a four-year contract.

Brief Description of Responsibilities

  • Work with the union leadership, other organizers, and activist members to organize lecturers at one or two of the 3 campuses, most likely Ann Arbor
  • Sign up new members; identify, recruit and develop members to participate in the organizing process and  committees
  • Respond to the decisions of a volunteer-run organization
  • Represent LEO to members and community and occasionally HR
  • Help manage membership data

LEO requires applicants to have:

  • Organizing experience with unions, higher education, political action, a volunteer-run organization and/or a coalitional campaign
  • Strong one-to-one organizing skills and willingness to engage lecturers on campus and at their homes
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
  • Willingness to travel to all three UM campuses on occasion
  • Willingness to implement organizing plans as decided by LEO leadership
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work with other campus stakeholders in coalitional efforts
  • Ability to facilitate groups
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and cooperatively
  • Basic computing and data systems knowledge

LEO prefers applicants to have:

  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
  • Understanding of labor contracts
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Writing and Social Media skills

LEO will accept applications until the position is filled, and will start interviews in late June. We hope to hire an organizer to start in the middle of August. The annual minimum salary for a 100% appointment is $58,000, with pay increasing on a step scale based on relevant experience. Healthcare, paid vacation, and other benefits are provided.
