Industrial Hygienist
Health, Safety and Environment Department

The United Steelworkers, the nation’s largest industrial Union, seeks an energetic individual with industrial hygiene skills who is interested in applying those skills to advocate on behalf of working people.
The USW Health, Safety and Environment Department advocates for safer workplaces, worker’s rights, improved regulations, and building the union with member involvement to make a stronger labor movement.
The successful candidate would work with Department staff to provide: technical and strategic assistance with workplace health, safety and environmental (HSE) issues; responding to HSE incidents; conducting HSE investigations; assisting with and conducting HSE education and training programs, and working for better HSE regulations and legal standards with allies who support workers rights.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide expertise at a professional level using independent judgment in Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) research, planning, development, inspection, investigation, analysis, training, implementation and application of all matters and related functions as assigned
- Local union assistance, both on-site and remotely by working with local union leaders, members, and employers from a range of sectors to handle industrial hygiene, environmental, and safety items
- Develop written industrial hygiene information, training and education materials
- Develop strategies and recommendations that are responsive to a variety of industrial hygiene and environmental queries and concerns
- Review and analyze industrial hygiene and environmental reports developed by employers, consultants and others
- Coordinate HSE meetings with local unions and USW staff
- Conduct research on industrial hygiene and/or environmental concerns, including those involving various production processes, and present recommendations for solutions
- Conduct HSE inspections
- Conduct investigations of fatalities, injuries, illnesses, incidents and near misses
- Represent the USW in OSHA, MSHA, EPA, CSB, and other related governmental agency proceedings
- Represent the USW in government rulemaking processes
- Provide assistance with contract negotiations related to HSE
- Identify/analyze HSE hazards (safety: including biological, chemical, ergonomic, physical, and stress-related exposures and safety-related exposures), and recommend controls
- Understand uses and limitations of HSE laws and regulations, and make recommendations for their effective use
- Negotiate HSE issues with employers
- Develop and present HSE training and education on a variety of HSE topics to be conducted in a variety of settings
- Help develop and lead campaigns for improved HSE laws, regulations, contracts, and HSE workplace conditions
- Able to work some long hours and weekends
- And other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in industrial hygiene
- At least three years of industrial hygiene and environmental work experience
- Preferred: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- At least three years of HSE experience working with the labor movement; COSH groups; and/or social, economic/environmental justice organizations
- A commitment to fighting for workers and HSE justice
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience working on OSHA, MSHA, EPA and related government agency issues
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, think ahead and meet deadlines
- Strong communication skills
- Experience developing and presenting HSE training and education programs
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work in a fast-paced environment
- Self-motivated and willing to take initiative
- Willingness to learn, take direction and work collaboratively within a team
- Willingness to travel for assignments, and travel on short notice due to HSE incidents, including fatalities
- Willingness to work long, irregular hours when needed, including some weekends and evenings
- Basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google (docs, sheets, slides), virtual meetings (like Zoom) and phone apps for email, calendars and messaging that allow you to work remotely while traveling
Salary - Salary range is $72,000 to $111,000, with placement in the range commensurate with experience and education. This is a bargaining unit position. Generous benefits including health care and retirement benefits provided by employer.
