Role Description
This is a full-time contract union role with a 9-month probationary period as an External Organizer II located in Stanford, CA, discretionary upon interviewer. The External Organizer II will support and organize workers to build power and win better wages, benefits, and working conditions. The External Organizer will also work with staff and members to build diverse and inclusive teams, develop leadership skills, and engage in collective bargaining.
Areas of Responsibility
Typical tasks and abilities include but are not limited to:
- Identify and develop leaders.
- Conduct house visits.
- Organize workers, identify issues, and organize worksite actions.
- Participate in negotiations and contract campaigns.
- Perform regular worksite visits and conduct site meetings.
- Effectively resolve worksite disputes and problems of non-union workers.
- Participate in worker training.
- Lead mobilization and turn out for actions and meetings.
- Execute worker actions/demonstrations.
- Maintain accurate worksite (building and worker) information, and track worker assignments.
- Communicate with company supervisors and managers
- Do an effective delegation at building or turf
- Plan own work and make weekly and monthly plans from larger goals.
- Develop a worker meeting agenda and lead worker meetings.
- Identify which regulatory and legal issues are appropriate for the campaign.
- Develop rap for workers or the community.
- Assist lawyers and staff in investigating and filing legal and regulatory charges and lawsuits.
- Shows good judgment.
- Corporate research on companies and clients.
- Occasionally attend community/political functions, if necessary, as a representative of L2007
- Assist with community turnout for events (e.g. phone calls, drop off flyers)
- Conduct worker and committee meetings, including developing meeting agendas.
- Develop and carry out worker training.
- Carry out large worker actions.
- Develop worker or community meeting agendas.
- Develop campaign materials, (leaflets, letters, etc.);
- Develop rap for the campaign.
- Communicate effective message to media/community and clients
- Conduct first contract negotiations (with supervision);
- Work effectively with Member Organizing Committee and E-Board members assigned to it
- Contribute to community and political strategy for a campaign in conjunction with community/political organizer or coordinator
- Occasional outreach to community organizations and politicians to support campaigns
- Work in conjunction with the internal program and staff under the coordinator's supervision
- May serve as lead for 1-2 external organizers or a group of member organizers or lost-timers in order to gain necessary skills to be able to lead a team as a senior. Will be done with appropriate training and supervision.
Qualifications
- Strong commitment to social justice and worker rights
- Knowledge of organizing and campaign strategies, including political and legislative;
- Experience with labor unions or other worker organizations
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse groups of people;
- Ability to work respectfully, independently and collaboratively with union leadership as well as employer in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Relevant experience in labor relations, organizational development, or related fields
- Experience with collective bargaining, grievance handling, and contract administration preferred
- Knowledge of California labor laws and regulations preferred
- Fluency in Spanish or other languages a plus
Pay and Compensation
This position is salaried starting at $79,251.08 with benefits as detailed in the union contract
