Role Description
This is a full-time contract union role with a 9-month probationary period as an Internal Organizer II located in Stanford, CA, discretionary upon interviewer. The Internal Organizer II will support and organize workers to build power and win better wages, benefits, and working conditions. The Internal Organizer will also work with staff and members to build diverse and inclusive teams, develop leadership skills, and engage in collective bargaining.

Areas of Responsibility
Typical tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Identify and develop leadership.
  • Organize workers and worksite actions.
  • Participate in negotiations and contract campaigns.
  • Perform regular worksite visitations and conduct site meetings;
  • Process grievances up to and including arbitration panel presentation and Board of Adjustments.
  • Effectively resolve worksite disputes and problems of membership.
  • Participate in worker/steward training.
  • Lead mobilization and turn out for actions and meetings.
  • Maintain accurate worksite (building and worker) information.
  • Communicate with company supervisors and managers.
  • Conduct effective house visits and one-on-one communication.
  • Plan own work and make weekly and monthly plans from larger goals with appropriate training and supervision
  • Conduct worker meetings and committee meetings (i.e. organizing, COPE, leadership, and civil & human rights) with appropriate training and supervision
  • Plan own work and make weekly and monthly plans from larger goals;
  • Conduct worker and committee meetings, including developing meeting agendas.
  • Develop and carry out worker training.
  • Negotiate smaller contracts, including serving as the chief negotiator;
  • Coordinate contract campaigns for smaller contracts.
  • Investigate and present grievances up to and including preparation for arbitration.
  • Carry out large worker actions.
  • Communicate campaign/organization message to the press.
  • Develop written campaign materials (leaflets etc.).
  • May serve as lead for 1-2 internal organizers or a group of member organizers or lost-timers in order to gain necessary skills to be able to lead a team as a senior.
  • Will be done with appropriate training and supervision.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to social justice and worker rights
  • Knowledge of organizing and campaign strategies, including political and legislative;
  • Experience with labor unions or other worker organizations
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse groups of people;
  • Ability to work respectfully, independently and collaboratively with union leadership as well as employer in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Relevant experience in labor relations, organizational development, or related fields
  • Experience with collective bargaining, grievance handling, and contract administration preferred
  • Knowledge of California labor laws and regulations preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages a plus

Pay and Compensation
This position is salaried starting at $79,251.08 with benefits as detailed in the union contract
