Staff Organizer

Based in Providence, RI

Job Description:
The Graduate Labor Organization at Brown University is now accepting applications for a Staff Organizer to join our team. This is a full-time one year project-based position, with the possibility to extend, to work on internal organizing with graduate student-employees. The organizer will be responsible for: building relationships with student workers, recruiting more leaders to the organizing committee, training those leaders in having 1:1 conversations, developing issues-based organizing plans with structure tests and accountability measures. Union organizing experience is strongly preferred.

The organizer will report to the GLO President and the Organizing Coordinator and will be under the direct supervision of current staff organizers who can guide and support the new organizer.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in the one-on-one organizing conversation and ability to train others
  • Familiarity with the organizing model of a union built on collective action and membership governance
  • Flexibility with working hours which will involve some evenings and weekends
  • Dedicated to social and economic justice
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
  • Have strong communications skills
  • Must be competent in basic computer/web functions, and social media platforms
  • Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
  • Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from GLO leadership and staff
  • At least 1 year of previous labor and/or community organizing

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conducting one-on-one organizing conversations, and training organizers in how to facilitate the 6-step conversation
  • Developing the organizing committee, including drafting meeting agendas and teaching committee to develop agendas.
  • Creating and working with others to develop and revise weekly strategic plans, larger scale structure tests, and charting of the worksite
  • Building union visibility through site visits—engaging employees on site and keeping workers focused on the union message and goals.
  • Meeting goals regarding new membership and leadership recruitment.
  • Supporting and developing local leaders and activists
  • Identifying local worksite issues and planning worker actions to address workplace problems—using organizing whenever possible to solve problems
  • Training member organizers and stewards in the field (as well as in the classroom).
  • Working constructively with union staff and member leadership, coworkers
  • Maintaining records in the organizing database and training others in efficient list working

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience and will be evaluated on a sliding scale starting at $64,000/yr. Benefits are comprehensive and competitive, including health, paid leave includes vacation, personal, and sick days; travel and expense reimbursements if applicable.
