We are seeking an Executive Director who will provide union leadership and promote and ad-vance the interests of the bargaining unit members of San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teach-ers, AFT 6157. The Executive director works under the direction of the AFT 6157 Union Presi-dent and Executive Board. The Union represents approximately 650 full-time and associate fac-ulty on 2 college campuses with one collective bargaining agreement. The Union has deep roots in the community, and the faculty we represent are as diverse as the community we serve. The Union has developed a strong leadership relationship and is part of the decision-making process within the District. We are a premier local in California and have received numerous political and social activism awards as well as garnered positive mass media coverage of recent actions. LEADERSHIP QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS:
AFT 6157 seeks an exceptional and experienced individual who will embrace the Union's efforts in maintaining and continuing to build a strong and collaborative union. The Executive Director will assist with, implement, and advance the membership and goals of the Union while exhibit-ing commitment to social justice values.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Lead the negotiations to improve the collective bargaining contracts, using traditional and non-traditional strategies at the table as well as strategies away from the table to apply pressure from the outside.
- Analyze and evaluate the District’s budget in support of negotiations.
- Work creatively to solve member issues before they become grievances.
- Provide vision and leadership to help AFT 6157 continue to thrive in a post-Janus world.
- Work with community groups, other unions, CFT/AFT and FACCC in mutual efforts to benefit our members and our community.
- Organize activities to grow and strengthen the membership including responding to the needs of a changing membership.
- Work with Union Board on strategic plans for internal and external messaging, defining issues, and controlling narratives.
- Serve as the Union representative to district, college and community committees, and attend all Board of Trustee meetings.

- A strong leader who will effectively oversee and manage the union office and the part-time Of-fice Manager, and provide leadership and guidance to the Executive Board
Strong Communicator
- An effective communicator and team leader who listens openly and carefully, who is inclusive and approachable, who demonstrates flexibility and creativity in problem solving and who will work to build consensus
- A dedicated writer and communicator with strong writing skills to produce newsletters, negotia-tions news, and other communications with the membership and community.
Innovative
- A creative thinker with skills in both collective bargaining and solving issues without having to go to grievance/arbitration.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree.
- At least three (3) years of experience in Union related work and/or similar/related field with transferrable skills.
- Experience in the collective bargaining and negotiations process.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional work experience in a California Community College.
- Demonstrate effective analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic backgrounds of community college employees and students.
- Possession of a Master’s degree.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and education. The starting Salary Range is $115,645 to $152,937. Benefits are fully paid by the AFT 6157 and include: medical, dental, vision, LTD, Life Insurance and an SEP IRA retirement plan with vacation, sick leave and holiday time off.
WORK SCHEDULE:
This is a 40 hour a week job during regular business hours of Monday through Friday with some weekends and evenings. The Executive Director is expected to be on both campuses for a variety of reasons: to meet with members, attend meetings, confer with administrators, and perform other duties. The job also has a great deal of flexibility, in-cluding some remote work options.
LOCATION:
This is a primarily on site position that involves traveling between the San Jose Evergreen Community College District locations. Some work can also performed remotely.
