Job Description (role in organization)
Organizers at CTUL are the primary connection with our membership and essential to building worker power. Organizers make initial contact with workers and develop their leadership within the organization and specific campaigns by listening, understanding self-interest and barriers, agitating, and supporting workers to take risks and grow in their leadership. Organizers do this by visiting worksites or community locations, having one on one conversations, holding small group meetings, and facilitating group meetings or training sessions. Often they support a worker in fighting back against a workplace violation through legal channels or through small campaigns and through this process build worker leadership to fight for systemic change.

CTUL operates under a collective bargaining agreement with Minnesota Newspaper & Communication Guild, TNG-CWA Local 37002

Primary Job Responsibilities (Essential duties & responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following)

  • Acts in alignment with CTUL’s mission, vision, strategy, and organizational priorities.
  • Regular worksite or community outreach
  • Regular one on one conversations with workers
  • Regular facilitation of group meetings
  • Commit workers to public action including direct action, speaking publicly, serving on taskforces and work stoppages/strikes.
  • Commit workers to internal leadership roles in the organization or campaign and provide proper support
  • Participate in, take roles, and sometimes plan Direct Actions as part of a campaign
  • Collect, input and use data consistently
  • Meet regularly with the team of organizers and staff to evaluate and improve work of the team and yourself as an individual
  • Consistent communication with team and direct supervisor about work and schedule.
  • General responsibility and follow through on commitments

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with other staff through 1-1 meetings
  • Participate in fundraising for CTUL.
  • Support other staff when necessary in meeting CTUL’s goals.
  • Flexible to the needs of carrying out the organizational mission.

Required Skills

  • Ability to listen to people and identify what motivates them
  • Skilled in organizing conversations and obtaining commitments
  • Ability to manage one’s own schedule and time
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Google Docs, Zoom
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in food service/restaurant industry
  • Facilitation Skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

Other Job Requirements

  • For some positions, a car is necessary.
  • Have a flexible schedule, including some early mornings, nights and weekends

Salary & Benefits
CTUL has a tiered salary range set by the Staff and Board based on the principles of economic justice and inclusion. This is a salaried position currently compensated at $56,843.66 per year with annual raises as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This full-time position will normally work 80 hours per pay period, including some work on evenings and weekends. Benefits include: 3 weeks paid vacation, unlimited sick days, 5 recuperation days, 19 paid holidays, 90% employer-paid medical and dental insurance for you and your immediate family, 100% employer-paid vision, life and disability insurance, and an annual end-of-year bonus of 5% of your annual salary which can be used towards a retirement fund.

This position is represented for purposes of collective bargaining by Minnesota Newspaper & Communication Guild, TNG-CWA Local 37002.
