What You’ll Do ─ Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy Executive Director works closely with the rest of the Executive Team, including the Co-Executive Director and other Deputy Executive Director (who focuses on Operations and Program), to oversee the efforts of JMA’s teams across the U.S. to win powerful policies, create high-road U.S. jobs, support worker and community organizing, remedy historical hiring inequities, and strengthen American manufacturing. The Deputy Executive Director will work as the key shaper of JMA’s external brand and influence, working to build the organization's visibility, impact, and grow and diversify its financial resources.

  • Work with the Executive Team to develop and manage a team of Directors from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, holding them accountable to supporting their teams to achieve programmatic goals, address performance problems, and develop professionally. This role will specifically manage the Development Director and Communications Director and others as appropriate.
  • Work to ensure a healthy, inclusive, and collaborative environment in which team members can show up as their authentic selves and actively participate in the continued evolution of JMA.
  • Effectively partner with the Management Team to plan for sustainable growth, high-level program visioning, and goal development, as well as identifying resources and strategies needed to implement vision.
  • Work with Executive Director and Development Team in identifying, cultivating and sustaining national funders.
  • Work with Executive Director and Communications Team in establishing JMA’s brand, building its reach and ensuring it has an effective press and social media operation.
  • Working to coordinate the work of the Development and Communications teams so that they complement each other in raising JMA’s profile and resources.
  • Ensure that JMA is an equitable, inclusive place to work, is representative of the diverse communities the organization serves, and retains a high-performing staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures – both timely attention to individual administrative responsibilities as well as oversight to ensure the understanding and compliance of team members
  • Support Executive Team with board management.

About you ─ Required Qualifications:
Minimum

  • At least 15 years working in labor, social justice, civic engagement, environmental or gender and racial justice fields in progressively higher level positions.
  • Significant, high-level management experience, with a minimum of 5 years experience leading relevant work in a supervisory role preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the interests of people of color, women, and/or formerly incarcerated people at America's workplaces.
  • Excellent writer; ability to communicate effectively with a wide array of constituencies including funders, press, union leaders and members of the public.
  • Proven ability to develop effective strategies and lead teams in a variety of assignments
  • A sense of urgency necessary to drive change within an advocacy organization and ability to prioritize strategically.
  • The flexibility, energy, and attention to detail needed to manage a complex workload and rapidly changing contexts and view projects at a macro level while balancing the most granular of details.
  • Proven ability to build deep and lasting relationships with a variety of partners, including funders, board members, reporters, workers, and grassroots organizations.
  • An ability to quickly triage competing interests, and to identify which need the direct attention of the Executive Director, management team, Board members, partners, and staff. The knowledge to determine which problems and challenges can be resolved independently and the ability to do so.
  • A team player with exceptional communication skills who is highly diplomatic and has strong self-awareness and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to continually assess and thoughtfully develop the leadership of team members through regular 1:1s, setting of annual SMARTIE (strategic, measurable, ambitious, realistic, time-bound, inclusive and equitable) goals and benchmarks and annual performance evaluations
  • Demonstrated ability to model a culture of feedback with a commitment to continually strengthening practice of “courageous conversations,” including:
    • communicating clearly and directly with colleagues
    • being proactive to resolve conflicts and misunderstandings, especially across differences
    • consistently strengthening ability and practice in giving and receiving both positive and constructive feedback to
    • support each other’s learning and personal growth
  • Some travel may be required to meet with funders, speak at events and conferences about JMA's work, and to meet teams in the field. (Up to 30% of time)

Other Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
  • Must be able to communicate clearly on telephone with reasonable accommodations

What Else You Should Know ─ Compensation/Benefits:

  • Salary: $130,000 – $150,000, depending on location and experience
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for the employee and dependents
  • PTO includes 12 personal days, 12 federal holidays, and 2 floating holidays each year. JMA has a paid, two week winter break at the end of each December. Staff can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 20 sick days. After 5 years of work, all staff are eligible for 3 months of sabbatical leave.
