Business Representative

Based out of Hauppauge, NY
(covering CT, NJ, NY with some Remote)

 

IATSE Local 100 is seeking a candidate for Business Representative who will provide union leadership and promote and advance the interests of the bargaining unit members of IATSE LOCAL 100. The Business Representative works under the direction of the IATSE Local 100 Union President and Executive Board. The Union represents approximately 640 full time members.

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS:
IATSE LOCAL 100 seeks an exceptional and experienced individual who will embrace the Union's efforts in maintaining and continuing to build a strong and collaborative union. The Business Representative will assist with, implement, and advance the membership and goals of the Union while exhibiting commitment to social justice values.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  1. The Executive Board shall hire qualified Business Representatives. the Business Representatives shall have full power to act on behalf of the Union. They would be responsible for insuring that the laws of the Union are enforced.
  2. The Business Representative shall work under the direct supervision of the Executive Board and the Union Body.
  3. The Business Representatives shall render a full and comprehensive report of their activities at each Executive Board meeting and at each regular membership meeting. They shall each keep a daybook in which all current activities are listed.
  4. The Business Representatives, if not previously member(s) of Local 100, shall be issued a membership card, at the expense of the Local. Specially issued cards shall be relinquished at the expiration of their contract(s).
  5. The Business Representatives shall not accept employment within the jurisdiction of the Local during their term of contract.
  6. It shall be the responsibility of the Business Representatives, whether during or after office hours, to make the rounds of all areas within our jurisdiction and all fields. The Business Representatives will check to see that such areas are adequately and fully covered by this Union, to see that Union laws are being upheld, and that all contractual obligations are being enforced.
  7. The Business Representative shall hold inviolate the privilege of members to secure their own jobs and shall not intrude on that privilege by attempting to persuade management or others to substitute another employee who has previously negotiated for a particular job.
  8. The Business Representative shall supply employers with lists of manpower when called upon to do so. He/She shall keep a correct list of all work given out, as well as a list of the unemployed.
  9. The Business Representative shall represent the Local in all dealings with employers but shall at all times be under the supervision of the Executive Board.
  10. He / She shall be a member of all negotiating committees. Contracts negotiated by any such committee shall be subject to ratification of the membership unless the membership has in advance empowered the Committee to conclude the contract without ratification.

Exemplary Leader and Organizer

  • A proven leader and organizer with tenacity who supports, respects, empowers, and encourages the contributions of all members and Executive Board.
  • A strong leader who will effectively oversee and manage the union office and the Office Manager, and provide leadership and guidance to the Executive Board.

Strong Communicator

  • An effective communicator and team leader who listens openly and carefully, who is inclusive and approachable, who demonstrates flexibility and creativity in problem solving and who will work to build consensus
  • A dedicated writer and communicator with strong writing skills to produce newsletters, negotiations news, and other communications with the membership and community.

Innovative

  • A creative thinker with skills in both collective bargaining and solving issues without having to go to grievance/arbitration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least three (5) years of experience in Union Leadership related work and/or similar/related field with transferrable skills.
  • Experience in the collective bargaining and negotiations process.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrate effective analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic backgrounds of our members.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and education.

  1. The salary of the Business Representatives shall be set by the Executive Board with guidance from the membership. The Business Representatives shall be engaged on a contractual basis, with a contract being for a term no longer than three (3) years.
  2. In addition to the rate of salary and defined benefits, the contracts shall include a listing of the specific duties of the Business Representatives.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Hours of work are flexible during regular business hours of Monday through Friday with some weekends and evenings. The Business Agent is expected to visit work sites for a variety of reasons: to meet with members, attend meetings, confer with crewers / employers, and perform other duties. The job also has a great deal of flexibility, including some remote work options.

LOCATION:
This Local covers the tristate area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Some work can also be performed remotely.
