Join the Faculty of a Dynamic Labor Center

The University of Oregon’s Labor Education and Research Center (LERC) is looking for an applied Researcher to lead labor policy and organizing-related research as a member of our faculty. This is a permanent, non-tenure track faculty position, with a starting salary of $80,000-$95,000. The position is covered by our faculty union contract and, as a public employee, comes with job security protections and strong benefits, including sabbatical.

Oregon is a progressive state that in recent years has adopted one of the nation’s highest minimum wages, a universal right to paid sick leave, protections against unpredictable scheduling, a requirement for employer neutrality in public sector union elections, and the nation’s most ambitious schedule for transitioning to a clean-energy economy. We are looking for a researcher whose work can help Oregon lawmakers in raising standards and improving the conditions of working people across the state.

LERC is both an academic and an extension labor program. Our faculty teach non-credit classes for workers across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, and we provide education, research, consulting and strategic planning services for labor unions and other workers’ organizations. We are a small but experienced faculty – including economist and longtime Labor Notes director Mark Brenner and strategic campaigner and former Congressional advisor Gordon Lafer. We are looking for another person to join our team, based in either Eugene or Portland.

This position is primarily focused on applied research projects that are concretely useful to public decision makers and partner organizations, with limited opportunity for traditional academic research and production of traditional academic journal articles. Previous experience in applied policy research or applied research relevant to labor organizing, bargaining or economic strategies is strongly desired.

The Research Associate position requires a Master’s or equivalent terminal degree, but in exceptional cases, degree-less candidates with extensive experience will be considered for the Research Assistant position. We will begin looking at applications on January 15, 2025.

If you have questions about the position, please feel free to contact Search Committee chair Gordon Lafer at glafer@uoregon.edu.

Women and candidates of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
