JOB INFORMATION SUMMARY:
A Deputy Director of Organizing is needed for full-time work in our District, with base work in Cleveland, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio and the surrounding area with nursing home workers, social services workers, and other health care workers.
DESCRIPTION:
A Deputy Director of Organizing in SEIU District 1199 WV/KY/OH is responsible for:
Grassroots Organizing and Union Leadership Development
- Recruit for, plan, and participate in a range of 501(c)(5) grassroots advocacy activities across W. Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, such as supporter recruitment, member engagement, and campaigns
- Organize and lead workers into unionization using agitation and other basic organizing principles.
- Mentor, guide and manage workers through complicated union and bargaining situations
- Maintain activist database (The VAN) to track supporters, volunteers, and events, and use data to identify strategic ways to engage supporters
- Serve as an organizational spokesperson as necessary to the media, the community, and on social media; work with Public Affairs Department staff to ensure digital, comms, and press work is integrated into the organizing strategy
Creating and Driving Issue Campaigns
- Develop a union-wide strategic organizing plan including industry analysis, identified opportunities, appropriate methods, and staff plans
- Coordinate and engage in lobbying efforts at the local, state, and federal levels to advance the Union’s mission and goals as needed
- Serve as a thought partner to leadership on growing organizational infrastructure and influence; support fundraising efforts (primarily by providing program updates) as needed
- Represent the union in meetings with management, community organizations, and other settings
- Maintain regular and accurate collaboration with and reporting to the President
Team Management and Leadership
- Supervise performance of Field Organizing staff and give timely, effective feedback to improve performance
- Exercise good judgment in delegation to Field Organizing staff
- Develop competencies of Field Organizing staff
- Lead Field Organizing staff to set and maintain standards for Field Organizing performance
- Lead Field Organizing staff in strategic and tactical decision-making on campaigns
- Guide Field Organizing staff in complicated campaigns
- Propose and implement internal and external leadership development programming
- Analyze and develop systems that increase performance in meeting objectives of union program
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires frequent travel and overnight stays, as well as occasional participation in special campaigns that require longer term travel with overnight stays.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Must possess liability car insurance of no less than $100,000/$300,000.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education:
- G.E.D. or High School Diploma
Required Experience:
- Personal or professional experience organizing and unionizing workers
- Proven communication and leadership skills, astute decision making, organizational aptitude, and assertiveness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment and passion for racial, gender and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside organizations.
- Good strategic and tactical thinking
Preferred Experience:
- 3 – 5 years’ experience in community, issue, labor, or electoral organizing experience and 2 years of election cycles of management experience (or equivalent)
- Successful fulfillment of union organizing supervisory role
- Demonstrated experience with training, group facilitation, and relational skills to grow capacity and move a group of people who may come from different backgrounds and understanding towards transformative relationships and shared goals
- Experience supervising diverse organizers/field staff.
- Knowledge of union history, organization, divisions, and programs
