Basic Job Function: To promote and advance the legislative priorities of the American Postal Workers Union. Provide support to the Director in several broad areas - including, but not limited to: administrative, research, analysis, election outreach, and communications.
This is a full-time, in-person position.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Produce reports, magazine articles, legislative information sheets, and talking points for member education;
- Assist in the development of legislative training and educational programs;
- Support APWU Locals and States with material for conferences and conventions/coordinate logistics for Department attendance;
- As assigned, attend conferences, congressional hearings, meetings, special events, in the promotion and support of our legislative priorities;
- Work in partnership with organizations and build coalitions to further our legislative agenda;
- Foster relations with members of congress staff, AFL-CIO staff and advocacy groups
- Assist in the tracking of state legislative sessions/state level issues (legislation and ballot issues) of interest to APWU;
- Work with other departments within the APWU on special projects, as assigned;
- Work closely with the APWU Communications Dept. to ensure all legislative materials are up to date on the APWU website;
- Assist with APWU’s political program during elections cycles;
- Assist in the organization and recruitment of volunteers for labor and political events;
- Recommend engagement strategies to the Director pertaining to GOTV efforts and member education.
Qualifications
- Excellent written and communication skills with the ability to accurately summarize and convey complex information.
- Excellent judgment, strategic planning, creative problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Experience researching data from a range of sources and compiling clear, comprehensive position papers.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to reach goals on multiple fast-paced projectors at once, while prioritizing work to meet deadlines.
- Ability to take direction, work independently, and take initiative within areas of responsibility.
- A proven track record of interdepartmental collaboration.
- Knowledge of unions or other nonprofit advocacy/membership organizations.
Education
Graduation from an accredited four-year college program with course work in Political Science, government, or a related field is preferred; however, any existing work experience/education will be considered.
Salary
The pay range will be between $65,000 - $85,000, depending on skills and experience. Generous benefits, including health insurance.
