POSITION SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITES: Working under the direction of a Contracts and Enforcement Coordinator, this individual will be part of USWW’s new Contracts and Enforcement Department. Our goal is to apply strategic organizing principles and strategies to use the enforcement of union contracts and employment law to build worker leadership and power on the shop floor.

Examples of Duties:

  • Engage in and develop strategies to address complex and large-scale disputes proactively across bargaining units, geographies and industries.
  • Represent workers directly, collectively and individually, working with members, field staff and employers to enforce contract & resolve worksite disputes and issues.
  • Effectively train, support and coordinate with field staff and members to enforce both law and contract through individual and class grievances from intake through to arbitration and, as needed, through regulatory actions and litigation.
  • Negotiate settlements and contracts and support strategic campaigns in coordination with field teams to engage members and member leaders in learning through action.
  • Support expansion of the Union’s use of technology, mapping and mass communication to drive education and enforcement across large groups of the Union’s membership.
  • Develop and maintain data and mapping systems with accurate and detailed information on contracts, worksites, individual workers and service contract procurement systems.
  • Prepare and manage workplans, calendars, files, and records.
  • Support and participate in all aspects of the Union’s field programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS: Graduation from an accredited college or university in relevant field OR equivalent experience in labor & community organizing that would provide for the following knowledge of, skills & abilities.

  • Proven commitment to social and economic justice and improving the lives of working people.
  • Experience working on campaigns with a labor union, public policy, or non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles.
  • An understanding of leadership development and popular/adult education.
  • Curriculum development and review experience.
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to interpret collective bargaining agreements and other relevant laws codes, and work with regulatory agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and diverse team environment.
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly convey information and ideas both verbally and in writing across audiences.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, social media platforms, database & teleconferencing.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel in California, ability to work extended and irregular hours, and visit worksites.
  • Valid drivers’ license, use of a car for work, and specified automobile insurance coverage are mandatory. All employees are required to be fully vaccinated and report their vaccination status as a condition of employment.
  • All employees must abide by USWW Safety Guidelines, including the required use of face covering while working.

  • Salary is competitive and negotiable based on experience. (Based on Staff Union Contract.)
