Accountant / Bookkeeper Assistant

Who We Are
The Los Angeles College Faculty Guild (AFT 1521) is the exclusive bargaining agent representing over 4,000 full-time and adjunct faculty working in the nine community colleges within the Los Angeles Community College District. The Guild has represented the district's faculty since the beginning of collective bargaining in California's community colleges in 1977 and is the largest local union of community college faculty in California.
Accountant/Bookkeeper Assistant
We are seeking an organized and detail-oriented Accountant/Bookkeeper Assistant who will support the Accountant/ Bookkeeper with various accounting duties, including daily transactional tasks, including managing invoices, processing payments and deposits, preparing checks and maintaining accurate records of income and expenses. The ideal candidate has the ability to communicate effectively, a commitment to data accuracy, and demonstrates a willingness to learn new skills.
Responsibilities
The Accountant/Bookkeeper Assistant:
- Maintains records of financial transactions by established accounts; posting transactions; ensuring legal requirements compliance
- Assists with data entry in accounting software (QuickBooks)
- Maintains subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions
- Prepares financial reports by collecting and summarizing account information and reconciles bank statements
- Assists in updating and balancing the general ledger
- Processes accounts receivable/payable and handle monthly and bi-weekly payroll in a timely manner
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by filing reports and advising supervisor on needed actions
- Maintains financial security by following internal controls and reporting
- Processes employee and member reimbursement claims verifying proper documentation
- Provides required financial information and reports to the Executive Director, the Treasurer and Officers, and the auditor
- Assists in the preparation of the Quarterly and Annual budget and audits
- Maintains digital and physical records by filing and scanning documents
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks and projects as needed
- Completes other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Proven bookkeeping experience
- Experience with QuickBooks, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) Google Drive, payroll (including direct payroll deposit), accounts receivable and accounts payable
- Solid understanding of bookkeeping, accounting payable/receivable, and payroll principles and procedures
- Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information
- Time management/ability to multitask and work under pressure
- Excellent communication and organization skills
- Great customer service skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- At least two years of accounting/bookkeeping experience
- Labor Union bookkeeping strongly preferred
- Non-profit bookkeeping is preferred; specific experience in grant allocation and tracking foundation and business grants is preferred.
Time Commitment: Part-Time 20-hours per week.
Salary: $31 - $34.88 per hour. Excellent benefits package with vacation, including office closure during winter holidays, family healthcare, and 401k. This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with OPEIU Local 537.
