The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has immediate openings for Organizers in its Campaigns Department.
The ATU Campaigns Department is tasked with building the organizational strength of our existing members and organizing new members. ATU Organizers help our local unions build high-participation campaigns to win strong contracts and strike when necessary, develop campaigns to fund transit service, and organize unorganized transit workers. Organizers deal with local and International Union leaders on a daily basis, and build deep connections with members and workers. They play a lead role in the development, execution, and analysis of ATU International and Local Union campaigns.
The ATU is the largest union representing transit workers in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1892, ATU is comprised of over 200,000 members throughout the transit industry including municipal transit, paratransit, school bus, interstate coach, subway, light rail, commuter rail and streetcar operators, mechanics, dispatchers, and other allied transit workers. ATU has more than 240 constituent Locals in 44 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and nine Canadian provinces.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement high-participation campaigns to advance and defend the interests of transit workers and the communities they serve.
- Identify and develop rank-and-file leaders, build committees, engage in one-on-one conversations with members and unorganized transit workers.
- Investigate and identify new organizing targets.
- Write and edit campaign documents for internal and public audiences, including campaign leaflets, campaign summaries, reports and press releases.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of campaign activities and recommend improvements in strategy and tactics as needed.
- Support large- and small-scale actions such as picket lines, marches, rallies, pack the room actions, and more.
- Build workplace committees.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in internal or external union campaigns or grassroots political campaigns.
- A demonstrated commitment to trade unionism, social and economic justice, and equity.
- Experience coordinating with 1-3 staff organizers on a campaign.
- The ability to inspire and motivate others to action.
- The ability to navigate complex interpersonal and organizational relationships.
- Strong writing skills.
- Proficiency in using MS word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs/Sheets, etc.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours with flexibility.
- Experience with digital organizing campaigns.
- Strong background in and affinity for the work of labor unions and work in a union environment preferred.
Location:
This position can be based in various locations but involves field travel, including to the international headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. This position will have full-time internal and external organizing responsibilities and report to the Campaigns Director.
Compensation:
Salary will range from $75,000 to $90,000, depending on experience. ATU provides generous medical, dental, vision and life insurance with no employee premiums; a defined-benefit pension plan with no employee contributions; a 401(k) savings plan; and paid vacation and sick leave.
