Staff Representative
Based in Central New Jersey
(hybrid - locations in Mercer and Burlington counties)
CWA Local 1036 is a statewide local union representing 8,800 members working primarily in the NJ public sector for state, county and municipal government, and the state judiciary.
We are seeking candidates for full-time positions responsible for contract negotiations and enforcement, member representation, internal organizing, and leadership development with our stewards and members in their worksites.
** A successful candidate will have at least two year’s experience in contract negotiations and five years’ total experience representing members. Public sector representation experience is preferred but not a pre-requisite. **
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
- Contract Enforcement and member representation: grievances, disciplinary appeals, departmental and arbitration hearings, labor management meetings
- Contract Negotiations – forming bargaining committee, developing proposals, bargaining with management, winning a successful tentative agreement and ratifying with members
- Internal organizing – recruiting non-members to join the union, leadership development with stewards, activating members to be engaged in their union
- Field work – worksite meetings, member committee building and meetings, steward recruitment and development
- Member mobilization around issue campaigns
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Effective analytical and communication skills are a must; ability to read, think and write clearly and convincingly; talk and think on your feet; make effective oral arguments and presentations
- Strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task and pay attention to follow-up
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and email programs
- Able to set and meet important deadlines, operate with a high level of personal responsibility
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Work experience in the labor movement, issue campaigns, field organizing, social work, politics, or legal fields preferred. Experience with NJ public sector/government employment, NJ politics, or labor organizing are especially advantageous.
Other: Driver’s License and reliable transportation required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary is competitive. Benefits package includes medical and prescription, dental, 401k, paid vacation and sick leave.
Remote working / hybrid is available. Office locations are in Mercer and Burlington counties.
