The Professional Staff Union (PSU) is a labor union of professional staff and classified supervisors at UMass Amherst and UMass Boston. PSU is affiliated with the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association. We are a member-led organization with elected officers and board members who are deeply engaged in the work of the union.

Under the direction of the Joint Executive Council (JEC) of the Professional Staff Union (PSU), the Director of Finance directs the overall operations and business functions of the local. The person in this role is responsible for the administration, planning, and implementation of effective financial, billing, and related support services and policies.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Administer, implement, and monitor all business and operational policies and procedures. Troubleshoot potential problems and make recommendations to the JEC.
  • Negotiate and administer service contracts, i.e. health benefits, payroll service, audit, etc.
  • Serve as liaison with the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA), auditor, and outside agencies regarding membership tracking and financial matters (worker’s compensation, MTA local support).
  • Ensure appropriate authorization, documentation, and account reconciliation for all PSU business transactions.
  • Observe and maintain cash management policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for bill payment process.
  • Maintains financial reporting system using Excel and QuickBooks.
  • Prepares and generates monthly financial reports.
  • Responsible for the reconciliation of monthly MTA invoices.
  • Prepares and generates monthly bank reconciliation and associated reports.
  • Supports the planning, preparation, and maintenance of the annual PSU budget.
  • Prepares annual Worker’s Comp audit documentation.
  • Recommends internal business policies and procedures to the JEC; implements and assures compliance.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with agencies and offices related to budget, accounting, audit, and personnel, including the university, the MTA, contracted staff, and service organizations.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of PSU and MTA data, activities, and positions as necessary.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with JEC officers and PSU staff.
  • Participates in JEC meetings and supports all JEC activities and directives.
  • Confers with and advises local officers regarding PSU business functions and practices.

Billing/Database Responsibilities

  • Manages the membership process – processes new members forms, communicates with MTA and Human Resources on the Amherst and Boston campuses.
  • Manages member data – reviews and corrects all changes in status.
  • Sends member information to MTA support staff; sends new additions/deletions changes to MTA.
  • Downloads HR data; performs reconciliation on database for write-offs/refunds.
  • Reviews MTA monthly invoice compared to database, and collaborates with contracted database support professional(s) in reconciling discrepancies.
  • Prepares and provides member lists and reports as needed.
  • Reviews member records for accuracy in preparing for annual payables report.
  • Acts as liaison with MTA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS preferred; equivalent experience can be substituted for degree
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in business/non-profit administration and management
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks, Microsoft Excel, Word, Access Database, and ability to learn as required
  • Experience with billing/collections and data entry
  • Ability to manage the demands of concurrent projects
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of labor movement and union experience

WORK SCHEDULE AND LOCATION: This is a half-time (20 hours per week) position. Work can be completed remotely, with in-person meetings 2-4 times per month.

Expected hours: 20 per week

SALARY RANGE: $38,500 - $42,500 per year
