Kentucky State AFL-CIO is a statewide labor federation that serves all working people in the Commonwealth. We are hiring a Communications Director to assist in our lobbying efforts, legislative priorities, political advancements, union organizing, education, training, and mobilization.
Education and Experience:
2-4 years of experience in communications, PR, or marketing. Proven experience managing communication strategies for campaigns or non-profits.
In lieu of 2 years of experience, a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field may be considered.
Skills and Qualifications:
Strategic Thinking – Ability to develop long-term communications strategies that align with the organization’s goals.
Exceptional Writing and Editing Skills – Ability to craft press releases, speeches, internal communications, and digital content.
Media Relations – Experience handling media inquiries, building media contacts, and conducting press conferences.
Digital and Social Media – Ability to produce content across social media platforms and digital communication channels to drive engagement and outreach.
Photography/Videography – Proficiency in capturing compelling pictures and video.
Graphic Design – Ability to design effective content for social media and print flyers.
Public Speaking – Experience giving presentations and acting as a spokesperson for the organization.
Campaign/Brand Management – Craft strategic messaging for campaigns and overseeing brand messaging and ensuring consistency across all platforms.
Project Management – Organizational skills to oversee multiple projects, meet deadlines, and manage a budget.
Preferred Experience in the Labor movement, political campaigns, and the legislative process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legislative advocacy by monitoring key legislation and meetings of the Kentucky General Assembly, and developing and maintaining relationships with Kentucky legislators, legislative leadership, and key staff. Grassroots legislative advocacy through rapid response action plans including email, phone, and media campaigns.
- Develop and implement communication strategies to support union organizing, legislative advocacy, political activities, strike support, and other mobilization efforts.
- Oversee internal and external communication channels.
- Manage media relations and public appearances: building and maintaining strong relationships with the press, including pitching stories and op-eds, managing media inquiries, organizing press events, and developing media materials and messaging.
- Oversee social media presence and digital campaigns.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours when needed.
- This is a hybrid role based in Frankfort, KY, with some, limited travel.
Salary and Benefits:
- Annual salary: $60,000 – $65,000 based on experience
