The University Council – American Federation of Teachers Local 1474 is a statewide Council of nine Chapters representing approximately 7000 Librarians and Non-Senate Faculty at the University of California’s ten campuses. We are currently seeking a:

Full Time Field Representative to support UCSB and UCLA Chapters.

MUST RESIDE IN Santa Barbara, Ventura or northwest LA Counties

Desired Start Date: January 2024
Anticipated interview dates: January 6-10

Field Representative Responsibilities: The Field Representative will report to the statewide Executive Director, while working closely with the UC-AFT President and the UCLA and UCSB Chapter Executive Boards. The Field Representative will be responsible for internal organizing, leadership development, chapter administration and grievance and representation.

In addition to member and non-member outreach, member education and leadership development, the Field Representative will assist Chapter leaders with a variety of tasks including communicating information to the Chapter via email, websites and social media, assessing members, activists and leaders, updating a membership database, developing a strong site rep network, facilitating chapter planning, running workshops, handling grievances and responding to member concerns and issues.

Desired Qualifications:

• Significant organizing experience, preferable in higher education
• Ability to develop and implement successful outreach and membership recruitment plans
• Good research, writing, data management, basic literature production and computer skills
• Grievance and representation experience
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and efficiently with many competing demands in the context of a general plan
• Strong interpersonal, facilitation and group communication skills
• Experience in higher education, optimally with librarians and non-tenure-track faculty
• Enthusiasm, flexibility, and a sense of humor

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Two years of union leadership or union staff experience
• California Driver’s license
• Proficient in using Mac computers with PC and mac software. Knowledge of Gmail and other google applications a plus

Salary: Pursuant to UFRE staff collective bargaining agreement; the full-time starting salary is currently $86,263. This position is exempt and requires occasional travel and attendance at evening/weekend events.
