About the Position and the Chicago Federation of Labor:
The Chicago Federation of Labor is the nation’s third largest central labor council of the AFL-CIO representing approximately 300 local unions comprised of half a million members in Chicago and Cook County. The CFL is dedicated to the fight for social, economic, and racial justice in Chicago and beyond.
The Chicago Federation of Labor seeks a Political Director to lead the CFL political program. This position will report to the Chief of Staff.
Responsibilities:
- Manages the CFL political endorsement process, including convening affiliate unions to discuss races up for election, developing and administering candidate questionnaires and interviews with the screening committee, and convening meetings of the CFL’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) to vote on endorsement recommendations.
- Develops and executes field programs to help elect endorsed candidates, including liaising with campaigns, coordinating staging locations, running phone banks, cutting turf, and recruiting and training volunteers.
- Develop and executes the organization’s political mail program in support of endorsed candidates
- Tracks and manages activity of the CFL Political Action Committee
- Organizes political fundraisers and other CFL-hosted meetings and events
- Oversees outreach to elected officials for the CFL’s annual Labor Day Reception
- Assists with legislative projects, including tracking and summarizing legislation, lobbying elected officials, and representing the CFL in various public policy coalitions to advocate for workers
Skill Requirements:
- Five (5) years of experience in labor, politics, government or community/issue organizing preferred
- Experience coordinating political field campaigns
- Strong personal skills, including an ability to work effectively with a spectrum of political persuasions and in high-pressure environments
- Ability to work effectively within a team and manage volunteers
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong writing and computer skills, including MS Office programs
Other Requirements
- Ability to work in-person in downtown Chicago
- Ability to work weekend and evening hours as needed
- Access to a reliable vehicle (position requires frequent travel within Cook County and to Springfield)
Salary & Benefits:
Salary: $85,000 - $115,000 annually
Benefits: This position includes a 100% employer-paid pension, health, dental and vision plan. The CFL also provides a competitive package of paid time off and paid holidays.
