Higher Education Division Supervisor

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Higher Education Division Supervisor’s primary areas of responsibility are: Supervision of division staff, furthering the union member leadership program, supervisory oversight of higher education division grievances and arbitrations, and developing and implementing contract and other campaigns, and contract negotiations.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee the development of union stewards; develop and provide support on steward training programs; recruit and encourage member involvement in political and other union events.
  • Oversee the advancement of union member issue campaigns, including the development of campaign proposals, materials and timelines. Direct and work closely with field representatives during the execution of all campaigns.
  • Direct and manage relationships with key players in the Higher Education and Property Service Industries: Colleges and Universities, Cleaning Contractors, Security Contractors, Building Owners, Building Management personnel.
  • In consultation with internal counsel, deal with significant legal issues that arise related to union members’ working conditions, negotiations and the interpretation and implementation of multiple collective bargaining agreements.
  • Supervise staff of full-time, internal field representatives on a daily basis.
  • Conduct team and individual meetings for planning and implementing staff duties and responsibilities.
  • Create and implement staff development and training programs to ensure that staff performance goals are set and met.
  • Conduct strategic meetings to prepare staff to obtain union’s objectives
  • Review and evaluate staff performance.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will be able to lead, motivate and inspire members; demonstrate initiative in all aspects of the work while working under general supervision. While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the social justice and labor movements.
  • 3-5 years of progressive management experience, including senior management capacity.
  • Minimum of 3 years working as a field representative including experience signing union cards, collecting voluntary political fund contributions, ID, training, and developing stewards.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining and contract administration issues.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; strong verbal and written English skills
  • Ability to cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, both individually and as a team member.
  • Must be competent in administrative skills and be able to use basic computer applications (MS Word, Excel, Internet/email functions) as well as tracking and database tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is a full-time position that regularly requires hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is based in the Boston, MA office.
  • This position requires travel to worksites throughout the state of Massachusetts.
  • Valid driver’s license and car with insurance required.
  • This position requires traveling to worksites and participating in events, marches and demonstrations.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The salary for this role is $99,420.75 and a weekly travel allowance of $200. 32BJ offers a full benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. We offer retirement benefits, including both a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
