Internal Organizing Director
Based in Los Angeles, CA
DEFINITION
The Internal Organizing Director is a senior director position, supervises Los Angeles Unified School District organizers, building teamwork and effective relationships with staff and employers. The Director’s duties include coordinating an internal organizing program, collective bargaining and contract campaigns to build strength at worksites.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Works as part of the union’s senior leadership team to develop and implement the goals and direction of the union
- Creates and implements a LAUSD internal organizing plan
- Ensures that staff meets their COPE goals for the year
- Leads, coaches, mentors and trains staff, negotiating teams and labor management committee members to be leaders in the work place and union
- Plans and works with External Organizing, Political and Communications Departments to implement the program of the local through contract and political campaigns
- Plans, creates and implements organizing campaigns to mobilize members, recruit new union members, identify potential activists and build the capacity of the membership and its leaders
- Trains staff to develop organizing and representational skills that promote the goals of the union
- Develop action plans with staff to attain the union’s goals, while considering areas of organizational strengths and weakness
- Serves as lead negotiator on full and re-opener contract negotiations, as well as side letter agreements and demands to bargain
- Cultivate and encourage good employee morale
- Serves as staff liaison to Grievance and Arbitration Committee
- Supervises Internal Assistant Directors/Organizing Supervisors/Coordinators who supervise the department’s Internal Organizers
- Conducts timely staff performance evaluations consistent with established standards and expectations and makes recommendations on staff hiring and discipline
- Submits a monthly Executive Board report about the status of LAUSD’s organizing department
- Attends the monthly Executive Board and other constitutional meetings
- Participates in the political program of the local and may supervise other staff
- Moves the agenda and programs of SEIU, including participating in rallies and other activities supported or hosted by the Local and/or assigning staff to such events
- Submits Local 99 administrative reports such as Activity Reports, auto insurance. Outlook calendar scheduling, etc. and ensures that staff submits all administrative material on time
- Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISION
Works under the supervision of the Executive Director and Chief of Staff.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- All LAUSD contracts
- High level supervision techniques and human resources
- Team building techniques
- Organizing methodology
- Collective bargaining, collective bargaining agreements, grievance and disciplinary procedures
- Conducting investigations and processing grievances
Ability to:
- Thinks strategically and exercises judgment
- Promote professionalism, team building and teamwork among staff and exercise exceptional interpersonal skills
- Motivate employees to achieve assigned goals while holding them accountable
- Maintain confidentiality
- Demonstrate outstanding listening, oral and written communication skills
- Assess information and evidence while managing conflicting and changing priorities and meeting competing deadlines.
- Implement SEIU's overall goals and expectations in a competent and professional manner
- Establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience
- Graduate or legal degree a plus
Experience:
- 4+ years as a full-time labor advocate and organizer
- 4+ years supervising
- 4+ years direct collective bargaining negotiation experience
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong commitment to progressive social change and activism and understands and commits to SEIU Local 99’s members and mission
- Maintain a valid Driver’s License, current auto insurance, and reliable automobile
- Work long, varied hours including nights, weekends and holidays
- Drive long distances

Salary range: $114,000 – $145,000
