Our Labor, Our Movement
UAW 4811 Organizer Training Program
For a University of California campus
The labor movement is at an important juncture where there is unprecedented interest in class solidarity, collective action, and worker power – and a more urgent need than ever to build a movement that can advance the needs of working people. UAW Local 4811 invites you to apply to participate in the UAW 4811 “Our Labor, our Movement” (OLOM) organizer training program.
About UAW 4811
UAW 4811 is the union of 48,000 academic workers at the University of California system, including postdocs, academic researchers, and academic student employees. For nearly 3 decades, UAW 4811 has been fighting to make the University of California a better place to work, teach, and research for the public good. By negotiating contracts, enforcing our rights, and organizing in and out of our workplaces, we’ve leveraged our collective power to fight for — and win — economic and social justice at the UC and beyond.
UAW 4811 is a part of UAW Region 6, which is the region of more than 120,000 active and retired UAW members across 9 western states including Alaska, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. UAW Region 6 is one of the fastest growing regions in the UAW – in the last 4 years, over 30,000 workers have organized to form new unions and win first contracts as part of Region 6, and 50,000 more are actively organizing. Workers in Region 6 have also built mass participation contract campaigns – many escalating to strike action – that have resulted in numerous record contracts that set new standards for workplace rights and benefits. The massive success of these campaigns is thanks to a worker-led, movement-building approach to organizing that workers in Region 6 have been developing and refining over many decades – one that prioritizes systematically developing worker leaders and engaging high participation in every aspect of the campaign.
About the Program
UAW 4811 OLOM seeks to dramatically expand successful worker organizing by equipping a new generation of organizers to drive forward worker-led campaigns and locals. The program combines multiple training methods to help participants develop into effective organizers, including: workshop-style training alongside other members of a cohort, 1-1 mentorship from an experienced organizer, structured skill development, and hands-on practice working on a campaign. Participants will work either full time or half time depending on their campaign/Local needs. The program will start in mid-June and end in early October.
