Communications Coordinator & Field Organizer

Based primarily in Washtenaw County, MI

 

The Communications Coordinator and Field Organizer plays a crucial role, supporting the work of the Huron Valley Area Labor Federation (HVALF), AFL-CIO and the Huron Valley Area Worker Organizing and Research Center (HV-WORC).

There will be diverse responsibilities with opportunities to grow in the areas of digital, media, communications and political organizing. You will share some responsibilities with other organizers and volunteers. You will need to be flexible, with a can-do perspective, able to take charge of a variety of assignments that emerge in real-time in a rapidly changing political and campaign environment, while also managing long-term projects and responsibilities. Based primarily in Washtenaw County, this position is full-time and involves both remote and in-person responsibilities.

Your responsibilities will include (but are not be limited) to:

  • Social media tracking and generating social media posts and press releases;
  • Developing a wide range of communications content and graphics;
  • Developing and maintaining a media/press contact list and supporting the cultivation of relationships with key media people on that list;
  • Maintenance and organizing of data such as contact lists, Google docs and folders;
  • Organize calls to action including petitions, social media toolkits, letters to elected leaders, and more;
  • Supporting the leadership of HVALF and HV-WORC through scheduling, maintaining contact lists, taking notes, and finding ways to help leaders to follow through;
  • Working with affiliates and allied organizations to build relationships;
  • Staying alert to the ways identity and oppression play out in organizations and movements;
  • Being receptive and responsive to feedback, and providing clear and respectful feedback to your colleagues regarding how you might work together better;
  • Being able to work both independently and in close collaboration on projects, and to adjust to changes in workloads and deadlines;
  • Working on labor-to-labor political campaigns under the supervision of the MI AFL-CIO during election cycles;
  • Organize events and distributed organizing including rallies, phonebanks, textbanks, pressers, canvasses, organizing meetings, and more; and
  • With other staff and volunteers, developing and running training on topics such as organizing conversations and the development of strategy and tactics.

Requirements:

  • At least one year of experience with mass communications methods such as social media, graphic art and mass email/texting and/or field organizing.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Most comms work can be scheduled for regular business hours, but the organizing component of the job will entail frequent work in evenings and on weekends.
  • Occasional travel is involved, mostly within HVALF’s four-county area (Washtenaw, Livingston, Jackson and Hillsdale).

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge of labor and equity issues;
  • Political campaign and/or organizing skills;
  • Professional experience or training on the following: website development, Action Network, Squarespace, Canva, Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Zoom, Airtable, BlueSky, Tweetdeck, or similar platforms; and
  • Video production skills including video and sound editing, and photography skills.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Starting salary range is $50,000-$65,000, dependent on experience.
  • Paid holidays, vacation and sick leave.
