Communications Director

Overview: The Democratic Party of Orange County (DPOC) is seeking a Communications Director to lead and implement strategic communications that elevate the Party’s mission and presence. This position is responsible for managing messaging across platforms, supporting endorsed candidates, coordinating media outreach, and ensuring cohesive branding and messaging across DPOC’s efforts.
Core Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy that supports DPOC’s goals and mission.
- Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, and op-eds to local and regional media outlets.
- Manage and grow DPOC’s press contact lists; pitch stories and cultivate press relationships.
- Create and maintain consistent messaging across all platforms, including digital, social media, print, and email.
- Design or oversee creation of branded content including graphics, videos, and campaign toolkits.
- Maintain and update DPOC’s website and ensure all communications reflect up-to-date information and branding.
- Coordinate email communications and online fundraising campaigns using tools such as PDI, VAN, or MailChimp.
- Lead rapid-response communications on breaking news and emerging political issues.
- Develop and manage a robust social media strategy tailored to each platform, leveraging algorithms and engagement trends to expand reach and visibility.
- Support DPOC-endorsed candidates and campaigns with media training, messaging support, and promotional tools.
- Represent DPOC at community events and partner meetings as needed.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- At least 2 years of experience in communications, political campaigns, public relations, or related fields.
- Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with a keen political instinct.
- Demonstrated ability to manage media relations and craft compelling narratives.
- Proficiency in platforms such as PDI or VAN, MailChimp, and social media management tools.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding of Democratic Party values and California’s political landscape.
Preferred but Not Required:
- Experience in graphic design, video editing, or working with creative vendors to produce content.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills (e.g., Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean).
- Experience in electoral communications or ballot measure campaigns.
- Familiarity with CRMs or data analysis tools to evaluate email/social media performance.
Compensation: Salary starting at $70,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
