ACT-UAW Local 7902
the union for NYU adjuncts and New School part-time faculty,
student workers, and health service employees

Organizer

Based in New York City, NY

Job Title: Organizer
Status: Full time

ACT UAW Local 7902, the union for NYU adjuncts and New School part-time faculty, student workers, and health service employees, is seeking a full-time Organizer to join our team. Founded at NYU in 2002, our union has been at the forefront of organizing contingent instructors in higher ed. Over the past couple years, all of our units have renegotiated landmark contracts and mobilized members in enforcing the rights and benefits of these new agreements. Our union is committed to supporting the unionization of all higher-ed workers, and will likely see the addition of several new units in the coming years. Thus we are looking for a full-time Organizer to assist in the growth of our union and support for existing members.

The ideal candidate is able to take initiative and develop organizing strategies for issue-driven campaigns, maintain strong member engagement, assist with new campaigns in our growing Local, and help enforce contracts. This will entail educating members about the benefits and protections their current contract provides, as well as speaking to members about issues that may emerge in their workplace. The organizer will work with unit representatives, elected leadership, and member organizers to coordinate and advance these campaigns, while also identifying and cultivating leadership within the union. A strong candidate will have organizing experience in building unit level strength, increasing shop floor leadership, and steward infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Unit Chairs, Representatives, Organizing Committees, and other Staff Organizers to support ongoing organizing initiatives.
  • Identify and develop leadership within the union with a focus on maintaining the member-led character of our Local.
  • Help integrate new organizing campaigns into the structure of our Local, and participate in the new campaigns as needed.
  • Plan and lead trainings, workshops, and one-on-one assistance for member organizers about organizing best practices.
  • Develop and help execute strategies to win strong successor contracts in 2026-2028.
  • Assist with communicating major benefits and protections of existing contracts, as well as developing communications strategy for organizing.
  • Coordinate mobilizations, including event planning, logistics, materials, and turnout.
  • Learn a new Member Database and assist with updating member lists.
  • Support union committees and other member-led initiatives.
  • Consult with and train in-unit Part Time Organizers.
  • Learn contracts, bargaining history, and enforcement history for assigned units.
  • Work alongside Unit Representatives to develop grievance arguments and strategies to resolve contract violations.

Requirements

  • UAW Member in good standing for at least 1 year
  • Dedication and enthusiasm for the labor movement and social justice
  • Understanding of higher education unionism and the challenges facing NYU and The New School academic workers
  • Ability to work with a diverse workforce and learn distinct unit culture(s)
  • Willingness to comply with health & safety guidelines for in-person meetings
  • Comfortable communicating on various platforms (Zoom, Email, Text, Whatsapp, Signal, Slack, Discord) as well as in person and over the phone
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Fluency with Google Drive and Excel
  • Knowledge of common office and cloud-based softwares (G Suite, Zoom, Canva)
  • Evening work and irregular hours required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years experience in labor organizing, preferably with shop floor organizing experience
  • Experience with academic employment and/or higher ed organizing
  • Proficiency in social media outreach, digital organizing, and expanding social media presence

Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
